Hazelnuts recalled... US FDA

http://www.fda.gov/
Just a heads up-

There are too many links to post all at once here.
Just know that you should not be eating any hazelnuts. It seems as the last half dozen or so recalls on my list are ALL hazelnut recalls.

  1. From the Oregon Department of Agriculture:

    Oregon hazelnut recall
Key messages regarding the current hazelnut recall

    * There are no reports of salmonella illness associated with consumption of Oregon hazelnuts.
    * The hazelnuts that tested positive for salmonella were still at the Willamette Shelling facility and had not been released to consumers. However, as a precaution, the company is voluntarily recalling hazelnuts that were shelled at the facility from October 12 through November 25 but distributed, as they may have been exposed to salmonella.
    * Out of about 603,000 lbs of hazelnuts potentially affected by salmonella, only about 110,000 lbs. were actually moved from the facility and subject to recall (About 18 percent). Out of that amount, only 45,000 lbs is in the process of being located (7.5 percent). The remaining 65,000 has been located and embargoed, and never reached the consumer market.
    * Out of 20 hazelnut facilities in Oregon, this is the only one that has been linked to salmonella at this time.
    * As the lead agency, FDA is proceeding to conduct environmental sampling on other facilities.
    * More than 99 percent of all Oregon hazelnuts are not affected by the recall (This year's total crop harvest is estimated at 83.5 million lbs.)
    * Recall only affects shelled hazelnuts and NOT those still in the shell.
    * Source of salmonella is unknown.
    * Persons who think they may have become ill from eating hazelnuts are advised to consult their physician or health care provider.

    FDA recommendations for consumers

    * Consumers are urged to check the FDA Web site to determine which products have been recalled and will be recalled in the coming days.
    * If consumers are unsure whether a hazelnut-containing product is potentially contaminated, they should avoid consuming it until they obtain more information regarding the product.
    * Persons who think they may have become ill from eating hazelnut products are advised to consult their health care provider.

  2. I do love hazelnut coffee but its been so long since I've had any of that I have nothing to worry about. As far as the nuts themselves only....I've had pecans, peanuts and cashews in the past 6 months. No hazelnuts in any form. Unless it was in something I was not aware of it being in.
