Support the Earthquake Recovery Efforts in Haiti

On January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti just outside the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The devastation – in lives lost, property destroyed, and families displaced – is immense.

At the request of President Obama, we are partnering to help the Haitian people reclaim their country and rebuild their lives.

Our immediate priority is to save lives. The critical needs in Haiti are great, but they are also simple: food, water, shelter, and first-aid supplies. The best way concerned citizens can help is to donate funds that will go directly to supplying these material needs.

Through the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, we will work to provide immediate relief and long-term support to earthquake survivors. We will channel the collective goodwill around the globe to help the people of Haiti rebuild their cities, their neighborhoods, and their families.

We ask each of you to give what you can to help ensure the people of Haiti can build back stronger and better than ever.

Both of us have personally witnessed the tremendous generosity and goodwill of the American people and of our friends around the world to help in times of great need. There is no greater rallying cry for our common humanity than witnessing our neighbors in distress. And, like any good neighbor, we have an obligation and desire to come to their aid.

Thank you for taking the time to visit, and we hope you will donate to this worthwhile cause. The people of Haiti now need our assistance more than ever.

I imagine that if you are the giving type, then you have already done so.
I heard about this on the news this morning.
I believe it is very much worth posting, especially with respect to the political unrest that is permeating our own society here in America.

XOXO

  1. Former President Clinton cites fund-raising plan

WASHINGTON – Former President Bill Clinton said Friday he'll try to pattern a disaster assistance fund for earthquake-stricken Haiti along the same lines he and former President George H.W. Bush pursued succcessfully for victims of the Asian tsunami.

"If you want to just give $10, you can make a huge difference because we've got another week or so of the work you see on television," Clinton said in a nationally broadcast interview.

A U.N. special envoy to Haiti, Clinton was tapped by President Barack Obama Wednesday to work with former President George W. Bush, the son of George H .W. Bush, on a massive fund-raising effort for victims of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

Appearing on ABC's "Good Morning America," Clinton said, "I expect we'll do something like the first President Bush and I did after the tsunami. Our goal is to raise as much money as possible and put it into the most constructive channels possible." He said he and Bush "want everybody to get involved in this."

On NBC's "Today" show, Clinton called the next four or five days crucial, saying that rescuers will be "pulling people out of the rubble who are alive. While that gets done, we've got to move the food, the water and the medical supplies in."

Clinton also said that before the quake, Haiti was working to adopt an economic plan and modernize, and said that work could get back on track after the crisis.

"Because they started from a low base, we can reconstitute where they are quicker than everyone thinks," the former president said. "I just do not agree that they've been set back 50 years."

"If we go back to work we'll be all right," Clinton added. "But first we have to get through the time that's disastrous now because we don't have enough food, water medical supplies and shelter. ... Get us through the next two weeks. ... I think you'll be amazed how much good we can do, but I don't want to minimize how awful it is now. Let's get through this first."

Clinton rejected the notion some are suggesting that there's no need to donate money to the Haiti disaster relief because U.S. tax money is already going to the effort.

"That's just not true. We give a modest amount of aid to Haiti every year, but the United States and other countries that have committed assistance have done it after Haiti, keep in mind, year before last had four hurricanes that devastated the country," he said on CBS's "The Early Show."

"We've got to help them get through this," he said. "I would just like to ask the Americans who hear that message that they don't need any help: How would you feel if other countries said that to you and you didn't know anybody with water, anybody with food, anybody with a roof over their head and people were still looking for their loved ones buried under rocks."

  3. I'll be sending $10.00 in currency. I would send more but I'm sorry to say I don't trust the powers that be to get the cash to the people and my funds are limited. I will support relief efforts that send food, clothes, blankets, medical supplies more though. My generosity will extend to one shipment of cash and goods...(Sad isn't it.)...beyond that...I have a family of my own to look after. The rest of the world will just have to do their part.

  5. Not to take anything away from the Haitians... but I can't help but be a bit angry that once again we go out full bang, no expense spared, with all speed to help a country in distress because of the political gain while we STILL have not helped those at home who were equally devestated by Mother nature.

    *steps off soap box*

  6. You are correct Sweet Pea;
And not to take anything away from our own weather related losses-
But they are just that. "Losses."
In Haiti people are STILL being pulled out alive, and with each one comes a huge need for even a bottle of uncontaminated water and a bit of food.

That said, and even removing the need from the equation, comes the fact that the link is so apolitical.
    And we ALL need that.

    HAITIAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FRAUD ALERT

01/13/10—The FBI today reminds Internet users who receive appeals to donate money in the aftermath of Tuesday’s earthquake in Haiti to apply a critical eye and do their due diligence before responding to those requests. Past tragedies and natural disasters have prompted individuals with criminal intent to solicit contributions purportedly for a charitable organization and/or a good cause.

Therefore, before making a donation of any kind, consumers should adhere to certain guidelines, to include the following:

    * Do not respond to any unsolicited (spam) incoming e-mails, including clicking links contained within those messages.
    * Be skeptical of individuals representing themselves as surviving victims or officials asking for donations via e-mail or social networking sites.
    * Verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations by utilizing various Internet-based resources that may assist in confirming the group’s existence and its nonprofit status rather than following a purported link to the site.
    * Be cautious of e-mails that claim to show pictures of the disaster areas in attached files because the files may contain viruses. Only open attachments from known senders.
    * Make contributions directly to known organizations rather than relying on others to make the donation on your behalf to ensure contributions are received and used for intended purposes.
    * Do not give your personal or financial information to anyone who solicits contributions: Providing such information may compromise your identity and make you vulnerable to identity theft.

Anyone who has received an e-mail referencing the above information or anyone who may have been a victim of this or a similar incident should notify the IC3 via www.ic3.gov.
