Congresswoman Giffords Shot in Tucson
By J. DAVID GOODMAN

A congresswoman from Arizona was shot on Saturday along with several others during at public event at a grocery store in Tuscon, according to her spokesman, C.J. Karamargin. The Tucson Citizen reported that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat, had been shot at close range in the head.

Ms. Giffords, 40, ... was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson, the trauma center for the area, about 10 miles away.

CNN quoted a public information officer as saying that 12 people had been injured in all.

The shooting occurred at a Safeway supermarket in northwest Tuscon as Ms. Giffords hosted an event, called “Congress on Your Corner," to allow members of the 8th Congressional District to meet her individually. She has held several events since first taking office in January 2007. At one such event in 2009, a protester was removed by police when his pistol fell on the supermarket floor. This was her first event since her re-election to a third term in November.

Last March, her Tucson office was vandalized a few hours after the House vote overhauling the nation’s health care system, the authorities said.

Earlier events in Tucson, Oro Valley, Green Valley, Sierra Vista, and Douglas had attracted between 75 and 150 people, according to a statement announcing the event.

Ms. Giffords was interviewed on Fox news on Friday to talk about a bill to cut to congressional salaries by five percent.

  3. Sweet Heidi;
imho, it is not the guns.but the cracked and crazed attitudes (and the demented humans) behind them.

There will be n update from the hospital in about 20 minutes, according to CNN.

I have not agreed with much that Boehner has ever stated, but today he did say that an attack on one member of congress is an attack on ALL of them.
    This is very true.
    And indeed very sad.

God, there is even an injured CHILD!
    Sick sick sick...

  5. Sad day in Arizona, no she is not confirmed dead, but in surgery, she was shot at point blank range. I'm watching all info, praying for these families. A lot of speculation going,,,,, on targeting her because she votes with President Obama on health care and the stimulus package. shakes head, I'm just sick about this.

  6. You are not alone Sweet Pamela;
You are right too that is all speculation at this point, but my guts do not like what they are feeling either.

As Heidi has stated, they are not making any friends...

  10. I doubt if those who condone actions of killing, will ever be held responsible, they usually aren't. If this is about her backing Obama on health care and the stimulus package, that's really sick. It's funny, people who hate Obama will never admit they're wrong about some of the things they believe about him. The dumbest thing I was ever told is that Obama is fighting to get a bill passed to teach elementary school kids to be gay. When I laughed, my friend from high school said he had to get off the phone and he'd call me later.

The same holds true for the other side, I deleted one woman in Multiply that I liked for the most part, but she was so hateful when it came to politics that she scared me LOL. In one of her blogs she wished Palin would die a painful death. I don't like Palin at all, I think she's egotistic, greedy and condescending to her followers, but I don't wish her dead, much less a painful death.

    ReplyDelete
  11. That the people that incite others are not held accountable is also quite sick. And right now I wonder how many of these 'people' are rewriting thier night 'news' banter...

I get mean and nasty also, given that my own daughter will lose much by this possible repeal. I am more than passionate about the Health Care issue, and will continue to be.
Do I wish, or have I ever wished, a slow and painful death on anyone? Absolutely not!
Like yourself, I do wish Palin would slink back to her little hole though. To lie, REPEATEDLY, to people is unforgivable.

Palin’s defiant “Don’t retreat. Instead — reload!” tweet came after the signing of the health care bill, which she opposed. (From here: http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2010/1229/The-Top-10-political-quotes-of-2010/Christine-O-Donnell-I-m-not-a-witch).

You said, "people who hate Obama will never admit they're wrong"
Why is that? I still believe that our President is acting on his best thoughts for us all.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Annie, I too believe our president is acting on his best thoughts for all of us. I truly believe the people I know personally (in the mid-west) who hate Obama are racists. I grew up in the mid-west and still have contact with friends and family back there. Growing up in the mid-west during the 50's & 60's there was a lot of prejudice about religion, race, politicians and sexual preference. Judging from my friends back there and some of my contacts on Multiply and Facebook in the mid-west, I think there is still a lot of prejudice even though they deny it. Heck, if I didn't move away from there and the thinking back there, I'd probably be a much different person than I am now (and not so good of a person). You don't know that you might be thinking wrong, if everyone you're around thinks the same way -- know what I mean?

I don't blame you for getting mean and nasty about the possible repeal, after all you and your daughter have high stakes in the health care issue. Which reminds me, I still haven't heard back from Bonnie about her daughter Janet. I may have to start bugging her to let me know if your and your daughter's blogs are helping Janet.

  13. I saw this on the news this morning Anna and my jaw dropped mate, what drives some one to do some thing like that ( Not a real question Anna ) Pam said "Sad day in Arizona" I say what a sad day for all in a any society whenever some one else thinks they have the right to end other peoples lives because they may disagree with their policies whatever they may be. All I can say here is sorry to all the families involved

  14. I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY STILL HAVEN'T TAKEN DOWN HIS SITE!!!!

The suspect's site on youtube, after getting the info from CNN on his name, wanted to see if they shut it down so more crazies can't access it... I guess not yet.... However, from the reports and everything online here, he doesn't make sense at all...

    http://www.youtube.com/user/Classitup10#p/a/f/0/3L1lsLU-kUw

I sure hope they go for the death penalty after those 6 souls were lost, one of them a child... Senseless killing, mindless violence, and incomprehensible thoughts.... I hope the police can get to him and try to at least figure out if the boy is crazy, stupid, or mentally disabled... Nothing is an excuse, though, and I hope they don't try to do the Not Guilty by reason of INSANITY... That's just the dumbest finding in our judicial system... Even if they were insane, still should get prison... Not some country club sanitarium....

Jack, what I find interesting, is that I don't see LIBERALS going around shooting CONSERVATIVES.
Another thing, and maybe you can help my memory.
Was this the Congresswoman who was going to take on the Governor of this State regarding the two people who died as the 'budget' won't allow paying for transplants? 97 waiting in line (currently) to die.

"A San Francisco man upset with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's support of health care reform pleaded guilty to threatening the Democratic congresswoman and her family, calling her directly on March 25 and threatening to destroy her Northern California home if she voted for health care reform.

In July, a California man known for his anger over left-leaning politics engaged in a shootout with highway patrol officers after planning an attack on the ACLU and another nonprofit group. The man said he wanted to "start a revolution" by killing people at the ACLU and the Tides Foundation.

During his campaign effort to unseat Giffords in November, Republican challenger Jesse Kelly held fundraisers where he urged supporters to help remove Giffords from office by joining him to shoot a fully loaded M-16 rifle. Kelly is a former Marine who served in Iraq and was pictured on his website in military gear holding his automatic weapon and promoting the event."

    Jack, it's as I suspected.

"The House of Representatives will postpone next week's vote to repeal President Barack Obama's healthcare reform legislation due to the shooting of Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords, House Republican Leader Eric Cantor said on Saturday.

"All legislation currently scheduled to be considered by the House of Representatives next week is being postponed so that we can take whatever actions may be necessary in light of today's tragedy," Cantor said in a prepared statement.

Giffords had received threats for her support of the healthcare reform bill and her office in Tucson was vandalized after the measure passed Congress last March.

Repeal of the law is a priority of Republicans who won control of the House in November elections, and it is expected to pass the House easily when the vote takes place.

The effort is not expected to advance in the Democratic-controlled Senate, however.

  21. Hi Everyone...

A quick note here from Mom. She is unable to access Multiply right now on her computer. Something is wrong, and it doesn't make sense at all. The reason this is so bizarre is that I'm using the exact same network she is using, in the same hotel room, less than 20' away from her, and I'm able to pull up the site just fine... Hmmm...

Very frustrating for her right now, but she's bound and determined to get to the bottom of it so that she can come on and reply to everyone's comments... I offered her my computer to use for the moment, but she is absolutely not going to be taken down and defeated by a PC! :) GO MOM GO!!!! Kick that computer's butt!

Hopefully we can get this resolved quickly and she can come on soon...

    Love and Hugs to everyone!

once it is installed click on the applications tab of the left.

    UNCLICK anything checked under "utilities"

    then click "run cleaner"

it might take a minute then it will show you a list of what it deleted.... you can now close it and try to access multiply again.

    From here: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/01/09/132782471/tucsons-victims-young-and-old-public-servants-and-citizens?ft=1&f=1001

"The dead victims of the Tuscon shooting attack represented a range of people that might be found at any congressional constituents' event.

They included a 9-year-old girl just elected to her school council who wanted to see a real politician close up; a federal judge who happened to be nearby and stopped to see his friend the congresswoman; a congressional aide responsible for community outreach, and several senior citizens, representative of the demographic of the nation's most active voters.

Of all the tragedies, the death of 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green seemed to cut the deepest, as children's deaths invariably do.

The grade-schooler was recently elected president of the student council at the Mesa Verde Elementary School.

According to someone who knew her, she wanted to be a veterinarian. But she was outside the Safeway supermarket at Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' "Congress on Your Corner" event because she was also interested in politics.

Her grief-stricken father, John Green, a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, told an interviewer through a voice that broke at times:

She was born on 9/11. So she came in on a tragedy and she went out on a tragedy. Those nine years in between were very special. We're all going to miss Christina. We were four people. Now we're three. All I can say is we're going to be strong for each other. And we're going to honor Christina because she was a beautiful strong little girl. And we're going to remember all the good things about her."
    end quote-
