Nasty window...
(And no, it is NOT that warm yet)...

.

.

Good Morning!
~After a brief absence from our little blog world, I am back.
And with news too.

Taking up where I left off on Wednesday...

.

.

I won't mention any business names...

.

.
Casey and I did visit the rental offices. They had turned Casey and Greg down because of Caseys credit rating.
(She has never had a car loan, no home loans or the like... NOTHING, save for her pancreas).
After identifying ourselves, the secretary was unsure if the rental lady would even speak to us.
(WHAT
)?!?
~No, I didn't question her.
I only said, "Oh, that's OK, we'll just wait"... as we took a seat at their table in the reception area. (No, we had not been invited to be seated). But there is something about people plunking their backsides down in your front office, waiting, that seems to get someones attention.
Not yet on the rampage, I snapped a few pictures of their award-lined walls; and mentally noted the owners of the place. A Patrick and Ann Murphy.

I saw 2 plaques that resonated their willingness to accept early rental payment.

.

.

The top one for "prompt" rent.
The lower, smaller one for paying in advance.
Both with 'prizes' for their renters...
.
.

And I thought, "YAY, there really IS hope."

So we waited (and waited...) for the credit lady to come out from the back.

SHE came out with her guns blazing, and a welcome attitude absent.
Kinda shattered any optimism I might have still felt at that point...

But like I said, there was still that bit of hope...

We spoke to her nicely. (Mama always said, "kill 'em with kindness").
So we did.
(And for as long as I could stand it).

Gregs credit is just fine.
I asked if they would consider putting the lease in Gregs name alone.
The lady, (barely restraining her bad attitude), looked at me, pointed at Casey, sighed, and said, "No, SHE would still be living there."

Treating us like lepers then...

She said it was their policy never to rent to anyone with less than their acceptable credit rating.

She told us that Caseys medical problems were OURS and ours alone, and that we should do something about them! This, after letting us know how very unwilling she was to even speak to us.
She further chastised Casey for not writing an income on her application...

(Umm... Wait... WHAT????)!

Me:
"Hello? ~Do you not get what we have just told you about how sick she is?"
(DUH. I abhor life in the 'slow' lane)...

Casey then quietly asked her who the owners were since they had implemented that policy.
The lady refused to answer.
We asked to be put in touch with them.
No answer.
I said, "Patrick and Ann Murphy".

The lady told me it was time for me to leave.   ?!?
C'mon, did she think we couldn't read? (I really am not as ignorant as I look).
Sheesh!

Yeah, ok, so we left with Casey in tears.
But not before making a few calls in the parking lot, and snapping a few pictures.
(B*tch that I can be; I really didn't care how much us sitting in the parking lot bothered that lady either).

Casey wanted to go to Channel 26, and tell her story.
I thought twice about it before we got there too.
But between what UWGB did to her, what her last 2 employers have done to her, and all of her health problems, there was no way I could/would deny her the possible opportunity to get her story out.

Casey was listened to almost immediately, beginning her story with UWGB.
The reporter that does the "You Ask, We Investigate" stories was very busy... But asked that we not go to any other station, saying he would be in touch with us and taking many notes...

If you have clicked on my new link, you already know what transpired with his promise to get in touch with her. How nice to have been given even that little bit of respect, almost sight unseen...

Please send this link to everyone you know. Sooner or later perhaps someone "in~the~know" will be able to help Casey out.

This is an ongoing investigation.

I will write more later, but for now I must get busy around here. (The lawn MUST be cut so it can grow another 6" in the rain tomorrow)!
Hope you are all having a grand Mothers Day weekend!

XOXO
Anne ~aka "Leper", (The Elder).

PS
An afterthought from a friend, and a GOOD question:
Is it legal to even consider medical 'credit' on a credit rating for housing?

  1. I know where my mom lives they DO NOT pay attention to any medical stuff on your credit. I don't think anyone should, bills are outrageous and who can keep up with them if you have as many as she does. For goodness sakes people, are they stupid or what???? I just love the way you went in and took pictures of everything. lol

  2. Good morning Bart!

Ok what happened to the window.. it looks like it was the one on your vehicle..

I find their attitude quite disheartening... first of all.. because her credit score is not perfect doesnt mean she is a lower class or deserves such an attitude tossed at her. Secondly, I have always been told that medical does not go against your credit. I know my naivity...to believe such a thing.

Oh and please dont get me started on how companies assign credit to people.. and on credit card companies in general .. I surely dont understand the finance world and the thinking involved.

Still not sure if I would want to rent from someone with such an attitude in the first place.. surely there are other places.

Im gonna slip over to Caseys page now.. Hope you have a wonderful Mothers Day weekend!

    Mucho hugs and luv

  4. I'm so glad Casey got her story on the news!!! Maybe now that she's a celebrity people will quit trying to sweep her and her medical problems under the rug.

As far as using medical payments to establish or enhance a credit score - I've never heard of it being done. But the opposite applies. When your credit score goes down because you couldn't pay your bills on time, because of medical bills, creditors aren't allowed to turn you down for credit because of that.

The owners, manager, and the "credit lady" at the apartment complex better be careful, they're awfully close to discriminating against someone with a disability. Casey is basically handicapped/disabled because she can't work or function, because of her illness. From what I'm reading in your blog it sounds like the "credit lady" doesn't want Casey there because of her illness (not her credit score) because, as you said, Greg's credit score qualifies him for an apartment.

It sounds like you could really use an attorney about now. Not only has all this been so unfair to Casey, but parts of it are starting to smell a little unlawful / or illegal?

    =====================================

This is straight from The Department of Justice ("DOJ") and the Department of Housing and Urban
    Development ("HUD"):

The Department of Justice ("DOJ") and the Department of Housing and Urban
Development ("HUD") are jointly responsible for enforcing the federal Fair Housing Act1 (the
"Act"), which prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, religion, sex,
national origin, familial status, and DISABILITY.

One type of disability discrimination prohibited by the Act is the refusal to make reasonable accommodations in rules, policies, practices, or services when such accommodations may be necessary to afford a person with a disability the equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling. HUD and DOJ frequently respond to complaints alleging that housing providers have violated the Act by refusing reasonable accommodations to persons with disabilities.

(This part especially applies to Casey!!!) The Act prohibits housing providers from discriminating against applicants or residents because of their disability or the disability of anyone associated with them and from treating persons with disabilities less favorably than others because of their disability. The Act also makes it unlawful for any person to refuse “to make reasonable accommodations in rules, policies, practices, or services, when such accommodations may be necessary to afford ...person(s) [with disabilities] equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling.” The Act also prohibits housing providers from refusing residency to persons with disabilities, or placing conditions on their residency, because those persons may require reasonable accommodations.

The Act uses the term “handicap” instead of the term "disability." Both terms have the
same legal meaning. See Bragdon v. Abbott, 524 U.S. 624, 631 (1998) (noting that definition of
“disability” in the Americans with Disabilities Act is drawn almost verbatim “from the definition
of 'handicap' contained in the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988”). This document uses the
term "disability," which is more generally accepted.

***HUD's Definition of "A Person with a Disability":
The Act defines a person with a disability to include (1) individuals with a physical or
mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; (2) individuals who
are regarded as having such an impairment; and (3) individuals with a record of such an
    impairment.

  5. Saw the news video. Hopefully this will bring her situation to light. Casey may not be the first nor the last that has made their quest public about the denials. But it does make more places sit up and take notice that if they don't do what is right, they too will end up on the evening news. And it won't be the kind of advertisement that will boost their positive image to the public eye. Maybe even other's who have experienced the same kind of turn downs will come out and stand up with Casey.

  6. hehehe
There was a guy in the near office, but I don't think he was paying any attention.
Yes, that little camera goes almost everywhere with me.

And God forgive me, but when she said that about Caseys income, I wanted to slap her FOR her blatant ignorance.

  7. Sweet Connie!
I have NO idea what the heck happened to the window. I went around a corner and Casey said, "Umm, Mom?"...
And the window was down and cockeyed.
Too funny. The look on her face was priceless. (And a darn good thing it wasn't winter... or raining)!
Now if I could get the panel off the door without a torch I would even have it fixed!

'Disheartening' is a very good word. I honestly wanted to cry with Casey after we left. But she switched gears and (finally) got mad enough NOT to take the BS anymore.
    Proud of her for that.

  8. Sweet Renee!
I know all about those deep breaths... literally and figuratively. And by now I have even counted to a million (by tens)!

Why do you have to get a new door? Why not just fix the window? You have me scared now...

  9. OMG Sweet Deb...
You have given me so much legal backing.
    Thank you for that!

Now, as far as the attorney goes... I like to eat. As does Casey (when she can).
That said, Old Mother Hubbard is hoping that maybe an attorney will see this and act on her behalf? And be able to do so on ALL levels for her.

Like Connie said, it is very disheartening, and like you have said, it is MORE than becoming unlawful/illegal.

  10. Sweet PeachieBaby!
I finally saw the video too- after seeing the three different clips on the news...
Took me over an hour and a half to watch it too... (Dang dial-up).

There is power in numbers- and I hadn't even thought of that. We can still hope.

I seem to be so selfish sometimes and think that Casey is the only one going through this all.

  12. Sweet Nancy!

You are wrong, you always add a little something when you come to visit- And for that I am ever grateful.

Like you, I hope this all will work out for Casey- Quickly too.

  13. Thank you ALL SO MUCH for giving us this advice and support... I'm so happy to hear that this is not only "wrong" but that it's against the law. I just thought everyone could get away with it, and never bothered to do anything about it. However, with all this new information I, too, hope that a lawyer can help us out!!! It's not fair to any human to have UWGB and various employers doing these things. I just hope that because I spoke up, others will too and hopefully something will be done to stop this from happening...

Lots of Love and Hugs to everyone!!!!
    ~CaseyAnne

  14. It is most definately against the law and these places know it. They've gotten away with it for far too long.

Hopefully going public with your story will help you in more ways than one...and smack the morons in the face.
