[My] Life in Wisconsin

Do You Play?

hehehe
I couldn't resist!

Good Morning All;
It has been rainy since yesterday- Building up those water tables!  More on the way today too!
A big "hooray" for the farmers around here- Their crops needing this rain so badly!

The trees need it too- Some more than others.

About 8 years ago, I found this itty bitty willow tree; just a sapling, no taller than my forearm is long...
I planted it at the bottom of the hill.  It has thrived in it's new home. (And only that first year did I ever carry water to it).

I remember being happily surprised when it lived through that first nasty winter.
As I walked a few days ago, I found it hard to believe that such a tiny thing could be like this in such a short amount of time.

As it makes the old garage almost shrink by comparison!

Even from the top of the hill,
filling out the back yard so nicely!
.
.
Tired of being cooped up, I went for a little ride on Wednesday afternoon. To the store for a bit of parmesan peppercorn salad. Mmmmmmmmm.  Then stopped at Kelli's on the way home.
She was just beginning to do her evening chores. And even brought me a chair! (Evening chores being a spectator sport now). hehehe

The horses allowed to graze for a while, while she prepared their grain.

My apologies that I wasn't sat enough to really get good shots of them
once she called them up front!

.
.
While they ate, I took this picture-
Between the pasture and the pond- & such a pretty color...

Cnv0985

I don't know what kind of plant it is either...

Know that this was abut 30 yards away from me-
About 5+ feet tall

Do any of you know what it is?
.
.
.
.
.

* And now the question of the day...
.
.
.
Do you play an instrument?

?

.
Being that Punk is 3 (and a half), Casey thought it high time that she would teach the pup how to enjoy her music...

First, to point out "Middle C"

"Let's start at the very beginning..."
.
.
And then to show her how it's done...

Although I don't believe that Vanessa Carlton's "Ordinary Day"
was the most simplistic choice for a beginner
...

That dog sure tried to keep up!

After taking piano lessons from the time I was 4, I joined band in 8th grade. (One of my original piano teachers was even Miss Wisconsin)!

I played B~flat clarinet. Not badly- Not good either.

So I stuck to Chorus, Music Theory, and singing. Easy credits for me, especially since I loved music!
I $aved my allowance, (not hard to do, I was never into frilly teeny~bopper things). Thi$ money went for my guitar.
Self taught. I didn't play well, but at least I could carry a tune (mostly). And had such fun with it too.

There had been a talent show at school one evening- One of the guys played his own guitar and sang "House of The Rising Sun" so well that it brought tears to my eyes.

That was the first song I taught myself to play.
I am still partial to it, and even if I am in the middle of uptown traffic, my Sirius gets turned way up to enjoy it should it ever come on...

  • There were fun songs, "Me and You, and a Dog named Boo".

  • Timely songs, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (from the height of the Vietnam War).

  • Songs that were supposed to make you think... "Teach Your Children Well." "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia" "Harper Valley PTA"

  • And there were always songs like "Black Water" "Morning Has Broken" to fall back on to harmonize, etc.

Mind you, those are just to name a very few...

I wonder how our parents ever put up with us?!? (At least I didn't choose percussion)!

So... What's your pleasure?

Do you play? Sing? Enjoy?
  ♫    Are you singing yet?

Have a "wunnaful" weekend!

XOXO
Me

  1. I do not play an instrument... When I was younger I would peck around on my Grandpa's piano and could play "Silent Night" but that was about it... I do enjoy singing with the radio and will sing around the house every now and then. I'm not the greatest singer but there are times that the music just moves me!

I LOVE the purple flowers! And they're 5 ft tall?? I bet one of your friends here will be able to tell you what they are...

Since Casey was out, is she feeling better??

Lotsa love and huggles to you!

    Slurkie :-)

  2. Sweet SlurkieBaby!
Silent Night is the nicest Christmas Carol ever!
"Music Hath Charm"... So just keep on singing!

Those plants had to be at least 5' tall. Imagine they are weeds, but still very pretty!

Casey is better- Thank you for asking too! She had a physical, and all seemed as well as can be; although not all of her tests have come back yet.
She was very tired yesterday- (And I fell asleep on her once again. We have such different body clocks)!
    Oh well!

    Love, right backatacha!

  3. Yeap you got me singing when you mentioned the night the lights went out in Georgian and Haper Valley PTA...love those. I played the flute, clarinet, saxaphone, and the drums. My favortite though will forever be the flute and it is the only one I took time to master. My favortie song to play and the first I learned was Silent Night.

  5. Sweet Becca;
Much like yourself, Casey can play any instrument she picks up! hehehe
She even has my Gr Grandfathers civil war fife! Cool eh?

Silent Night on the flute alone must be even more provoking than being at Midnight Mass.

  6. Some people think they are ugly, dirty trees.
Even though it is messy, (and has threatened to decapitate me when I mow too close), I still think they are so graceful!

Shouldn't you be on the road by now???

  8. I love that weeping willow!, I'm the kid who went to band camp every summer since I was ten, I play flute still, and guitar, I have a performance arts major that my mom laughed at and said now get a real career which is why I was a paramedic..lmao but music is such a huge huge part of me and my families life, my kids all play assorted instruments and sing. I like you played and sang aaaaaaaaall those songs, People tend to laugh at the music of the 70's choosing only to remember disco, but the rock of the 70's is the best!! btw my sweet anne I can open your page, I'm not going anywhere I like it here.lmao..hugs hon.

  9. Sweet BethieBaby!
    I love those songs too!

And "One Tin Soldier" was another that I used to play a lot!

I can't think of one single "remake" either that I prefer to listen to. I like my "old" stuff!

    Willows are great for climbing!
(Not so great in a bad storm though).

  10. Sweet Pamela!
Disco wasn't huge 'til the very late '70's- and by then I was married, divorced, and had 3 babies to care for while my ex went to Germany with his then girlfriend.
Although the summer of 79 is one that I love thinking about still. (And boy, could I dance to them all)!
    Still love Donna Summer! hehehe

I am happy to hear that your kids are all musical too! I think it adds more than a bit of dimension to childrens lives when they can not only listen and repeat, but "know" how music and magic are made.

I am still so sorry that I cannot get to your page -
Happy you got my note too.

  11. Willows are one of mu most favorite trees. In the yard here, we have a Cork Screw Willow. Not as purty as the Weeping Willow, but I still love it. When my parents moved in about 10 years ago, the tree appeared dead. So my dad had cut every branch off and was going to have my then BIL help remove the stump. Time got away from him and before he knew, the dead tree wasn't really dead at all. Now, it is huge for it's place (not as big as your willow). I'll have to see if I can locate a picture of it or go out and take one, LOL

As for musical talent, I had some way back when. I played the flute from 6-9 grade. I guess it's bragging to say, but I was always first chair in band, even when I took part in All-State bands. (th grade was a bit of a dissapointment. Our teacher had little to do with us, often the room was never set up for playing, or seats were the choir stands. I got discouraged and never signed up for the class again. I continued to play on my own and occasionally for a church band.

Sadly, during one of our moves, my flute came up missing. I have never tried to come up with the money to replace it (I always put others needs before mine).

Sean will be starting his 2nd year playing the Bb Clarinet. I am amazed how quickly his first year went and how it never once bothered me to hear him practice. His teachers were great, and I believe the kids played very well by the end of the school year.

  12. Guess I'll have to take one, LOL

  14. I can't see the first picture...

but you already I think know the answer to your question.

    I sing.

I have played over the years to varying degrees of succes...

    piano
    keyboards
    drums
    clarinet
    guitar

  15. I love the weeping willow. They always look so graceful, especially in a breeze. And the photo of the horses is gorgeous. How could you improve on it? Nope... it's fine as it is.

Punkie really does look as though she want a go at that doesn't she? I used to have a cat who walked up and down the kepboard. Every now and again he'd sit down, wait for the echoes to fade away and then carry on pacing up and down. Daft cat.

Moi? I play cello (big violin - but not as big as a double bass - that you sit down and hold with you knees. I love playing it because you can really HUG that thing!). I've had Ferdinand since I was 14 years old and he's seen me through thick and thin (and fat and flabby!). He even flew over here with me the day after all the bomb threats at Heathrow in '06. He had his own ticket and everything. Mr A Cello! Brilliant! The flight attendants said that he was the perfect passenger (probably because he stayed in his case).

I also play piano, recorder and violin pretty well; and guitar, cornet (like a squashed trumpet) and clarinet with ear plugs in so I can't hear myself! AND percussion (orchestral, not drum kit!). In my last teaching job, I had a junk band using all sorts of rubbish that we could make a decent racket with. Old HUGE water bottles, car wheel rims, lengths of old pipes (whacked on the end with a table tennis bat - makes a great sound but is a darn site more difficult than it sounds), old oil drums of different sizes and then the easier sounds - ordinary small water bottles, fabric softener bottles and (our mega star) a supermarket shopping trolley! You'd never believe the fun we could get out of that thing! We used to drive the class next door wild!

Then on top of the racket we were kicking up, we'd sing too. It was great fun.

There's nothing like music for comforting the soul and relieving the stress of the day.

  16. I am singing.. I love those old songs... Imagine my surprise when I found out that House of the Rising Sun was Bluegrass.. who knew? hehe

I also played clarinet in high school.. not great but ok.. went to contest a few times.. even made 2nd place once.. A few years ago I tried .. cant even get a decent note out of the same danged instrument. hehe I did my hand at guitar for awhile .. self taught myself a few folks songs.. never really learned how to play it other than by ear and a few chords that a friend showed me. Back then I loved the folk music and would sit for hours teaching myself a song or two. Hell, now I cant even remember the words.

One of my favorite songs.. My dad did not appreciate.. hehe

The name of the song is ... Sunshine by Paul Westerberg

    Sunshine go away today
    Don't feel much like dancing
Some man's gone he's trying to run my life
    Don't know what he's asking

He tells me I better get in line
    I can't hear what he's saying
When I grow up I'm gonna make him mine
Please help dude I'm in pain

    How much does it cost?
    I'll buy it
The time is all we lost
    I'll try it

He can't even run his own life
Be damned if he'll run mine
    Sunshine

    Sunshine go away today
I don't feel much like dancing
Some man's gone he's trying to run my life
    Don't know what he's asking
When working starts to make me wonder to wear
The feats are what I do, I'm going
He says in love and war all is fair
He's got cards he ain't showing

    How much does it cost?
    I'll buy it
The time is all we lost
    I'll try it

He can't even run his own life
Be damned if he'll run mine
    Sunshine
    Sunshine go away today
I can't feel much like singing
And this old world, she's gonna turn around
The brand new bells will be a-ringing

  17. I love to sing and can only play the piano very little. I love the Willow trees they are beautiful. A pain to mow under sometime though.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Willow is lovely, it grew for you because you took the time to nurture it. (Your flowers also look so pretty!)

The purple flower is "Liatris". Go here for information on it:
    http://www.hort.wisc.edu/mastergardener/features/flowers/liatris/liatris.htm

I love your piano seat (the arm of your sofa) you and I arrange furniture the same way!

I was in the junior and senior high chorus. When I was little I actually wanted to take piano lessons (we had an old player piano that had been in our family for generations). But my parents didn't see any benefit in learning how to play any instruments, or learning about anything creative for that matter. I ended up being very creative though - in spite of them! LOL!

  19. Thanks for the tunes now running through my brain. I don't have much more room up there. I loved singing and acting. Singing is my first love. Music is soothing for the most part. I started on a clarinet. Worked to first chair, being bumped to second. I quit due to the smug attitude and arguing between all the band members. It was supposed to be enjoyable.

Then went back to Choir and acting. Love music.

  22. Sweet Oka;
I am so laughing at your dad- You cannot kill a weeping willow! So funny!

I had an old one on Jaworski Road, Half of it decided to fall one the house one afternoon during a storm. The other half remained.

Sam (Valeries dad) and his cousin came to take it down one winters day. They removed it to about 2 feet from the ground.
The next Spring, out popped all these "new" branches!
The people that bought the homeplace dug up the entire front yard to redo the septic system. That stump is now gone forever.
I swear it looked like a Troll!

    Now for the music!
It's like riding a bike Silly Girl. You didn't just have that talent years ago. You still do!
And yes, please DO brag about being First Chair! That is an honor reserved only for the very best!

I am saddened that your flute moved someplace else. Can only hope it is getting played and loved.
Maybe one day you will be able to replace it. (eBay maybe)?

Your Sean must be very good at the clarinet.
(By comparison, it bothered ME to hear me practice)!

You made me laugh at your daft cat.
Mine jumps up there, but Punk chases him off. He is usually trying to get to the window so is on the bass ivories.
(Scares the crap outta me when it happens at night).
Mostly the cover comes down so he can't "play" any notes at all.

I remember Ferdinand! What a joy he has been to you!

Punk goes crazy when Casey brings her clarinet out.
(That silly dog definitely prefers the piano with Casey being able to sing at the same time)!
Or maybe she thinks that Caseys nose suddenly grew!

There is a trick to mowing under those guillotine trees. And you can bet I learned it real fast too! I just put my right hand on my left shoulder and hold my lebow up- It keeps the branches away from my neck while I am under there.

Thank you SO much for the info on the liatrus! I do believe I shall have to steal one or two from Miss Kelli one of these days!

The piano seat works ok for now- It was the only way I could still be able to use the front door. (Little that it ever gets used anyway). But that couch, nor the backside on it, has never once complained!

    yes, you ARE very creative!
Andto let you know that NOW is never too late.
We got that piano, secondhand, when I was 4-
Mom didn't know a thing about it at that time either. She took lessons right along with us kids. She would have been near 50 by that time.
Her favorite to play was "The Skaters Waltz". When Casey plays that now it can take me way back!

  35. Sweet Mommy!

I'm glad we finally got the rain everyone has been praying for so long now!!! I love willow trees, and I think that goes back to the house on Jaworski Rd. I remember playing on that for years, although that one grew to mammoth proportions as well, and had to be taken down as it was over the house and one major storm would've taken out your bedroom and the front porch! I think they are gorgeous trees!!

What a gorgeous picture of the girls in the pasture! I think it's absolutely perfect!! Of course I'm biased on the subject, but I think it's pretty!

Not too sure what the plant is. I asked Kelli about it, being as it is the only plant that the girls don't eat when they are out there... She said she thought it was the plant that was on alert by the DNR as being a foreign plant that was taking over native plants... I don't remember what that was called though...

HEE HEE HEE!!! Love how the pictures of Punkie at the piano turned out!!! I don't think she enjoyed the experience as much as we did though! However, she does look at the piano and "contemplate" it more often!!! :D

WOW, you had a Miss Wisconsin for a piano teacher?! COOL!!! You need to give yourself more credit on your guitar playing... You are a MASTER at the guitar!!! I'm always in awe everytime you play, you play beautifully!

I think you know my pleasure lies in my instruments! My favorite of all time is the Tenor Sax, but am not "fortune"~ate enough to own one! My "baby" in high school was a Yamaha Allegro Custom... Boy did that sax make some BEAUTIFUL sounds!!! I really appreciated it as I had a clunker for all of the years prior to getting this one to use... Unfortunately it was owned by the school and merely rented to me for band, but solo and ensemble competitions were awesome...

Other than that I know: clarinet, soprano sax, piano, a little bit of trumpet and french horn, oboe, fife, flute... I think that's all... :D

Well, on to those thoughts and a blog! Even if I can't finish right now {tiredness is sinking in} I can get one started...

    Love you MUCH MUCH!
