TWO SISTERS RESCUED
Through a Unique Set of Clues

01/12/10

Child porn

The pornographic images spotted online by Canadian authorities in 2007 were new—and they were disturbing. They showed a young girl, perhaps only 6 years old, being sexually abused by an adult male.

But the images also contained clues to the girl’s identity—a beer can and a distinctive pair of eyeglasses. Ultimately, those clues helped a dedicated team of investigators rescue the girl, along with her 4-year-old sister, and send their abusers to prison for a very long time.

Here’s what happened:

  • The Royal Canadian Mounted Police first noticed the pictures online and compiled them for other law enforcement agencies. Members of the Toronto Police Services analyzing the images discovered a blurry beer can in the background of one picture and, after identifying the brand, learned that it was only manufactured in a handful of states in the northeastern United States. This information was shared with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
  • Independent of their Canadian colleagues, officers of the Belfast Police Department in Maine and later the Maine State Police were also studying the images and discovered that the victim had distinctive eyeglasses. This detail was also relayed to NCMEC, and a cooperative effort began among the various law enforcement agencies involved.
  • As the investigation continued, the eyeglasses were identified by manufacturer and model number, and the beer manufacturer said that the can in question was only distributed in six states, including New York and Maryland.
  • On August 1, 2008, a special agent from our New York office with our Innocent Images National Initiative program opened a case and began canvassing ophthalmologists in the six-state area to see who sold that brand of eyeglasses. Three weeks later, that painstaking investigative work paid off when a Maryland doctor recognized a picture of the victim.

At this point, events in the case accelerated.

  • On Monday, August 25, 2008, the Maryland doctor called FBI Agent Michael Sabric in New York to say that not only was the victim his patient, but she had come into his office that very morning—the first day of school—to replace a pair of broken glasses.
  • Sabric immediately contacted our Baltimore office cyber squad, which handles child pornography cases as part of our Innocent Images program.
  • A surveillance team was mobilized within hours, and when the girl got home from first grade that afternoon, investigators positively identified her as the online victim.
  • Around 9 o’clock that night, Special Agent Rachel Corn—a member of the Baltimore cyber squad—had secured a search warrant for the victim’s home. By 10 p.m., a forensic child interviewer, victim assistance representatives, and members of the cyber squad and evidence response team were knocking on the front door of the house.
  • Soon, the girl identified her two abusers. Forensic evidence later revealed her younger sister had also been abused.

In October, one of the men involved was sentenced to 45 years in prison for sexually exploiting a minor and producing child pornography. His accomplice had already received a 36-year sentence.

“This is the outcome you always hope for,” Agent Corn said. “Rescue the victims and put the abusers away.”

Agent Sabric added that this case “is a great example of local, state, and federal authorities working together toward a common goal. Every piece of information along the way was critical to solving the case.”

  1. 45 and 36 years, respectively, will mean nothing, given the fact that these aholes will be out during these girls' lifetimes.
That is, IF these guys actually live through being in prison

  2. I am thankfully to God that we have Law Enforcement officers that take these crimes seriously and are willing to take all the time needed to find and save these children from continuing abuse.

  3. I am glad that they caught those sickos! Those poor little girls. :( At least now they won't be abused by them anymore!

  4. Sweet Oka;
While I believe the harm was already done, I also believe that children can grow past these horrors too.

Reading crap like this, and seeing even shows from the childrens aspect always makes me feel chilled inside. A real scary and sick kind of cold...
Maybe that comes from having kids of my own- Maybe it's just caring about everyone, big and little... And knowing what is right, and what is ever so wrong.

  5. Swwet Suzy;
How do these monsters even get to live is what I want to know.

And while I know and realize that there have been many instances of wrongful death with respect to the death penalty, I also believe there should BE a death penalty for these types of epeople that will never get better.
And I don't care what people say about rehabilitation. That is crap where child pron and rape is concerned.

Odd isn't it that murderers have a higher rehabilitation percentage than kiddie rapists?
Perhaps because murder is not necessarily a way of life for them.
The same canNOT be said about child rape

  6. Fantastic! Good to know there are good cops around still.
    Mounties are hawt!
    I love CSI
Death penalty for sex offenders anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I agree. But ONLY for these child rapists, and for repeat offenders.
repeat to me means 2nd offense, not the dang 3 strikes thing.

I do not support the death penalty for 18 year old boys with a bad case of puppy love that cannot keep their paws off the girl next door.

Thank you for stopping by! CRMP do rock!
My uncles live on Sugar Island. Uncle Chum told a story of when they were little they would actually cross St Marys River and go to Canada for the day. Their favorite thing was to see the Mounties!

Now what happened to my beloved show "Due North?"

  9. I started to read this Anna, but stopped as soon as I got the jist, If you could hear the whispered venomous language that come from my mouth and the thoughts of what I personally would do to any person that interferes with a child and not just sexually you and others would be discusted with me. I did not read your complete blog or the following comments and am sorry, Society and the Law are not hard enough on these types of people, male or females. If ever I went to prison for some crime I would make sure I went in with lots of paedophile garbage bags to dump the ***ts in sorry for such a Venomous, malicious and unpleasant comment Anna, I fully understand it's deletion in it happens, Down here in Australia these things are called " Rock Spiders "
    I have an anger

  10. I'm glad these sickos were caught, if they think they've got away with it scot free there's no telling how many other kids might be forced to go through this sick plan of their's.
And I agree with Lester (hi buddy) and you don't want to know what I was thinking about as their suitable punishment.

  11. Perhaps your friends might like to have this link to see just how close they live next to these people Anna, I know that one of my friends has one living 610 Yards away from her.

  12. We need something like that here in the UK, but it will get the Politically Correct people up in arms, they will spout, their "yuman rites" have been violated.

  13. Too often the abusers are not caught. and these wounds follow all of the abused's lives. wonderful that there are dedicated people trying to catch these people.

  14. Prison is too good for these abusers BUT I am glad they are behind bars and not able to hurt these or any other children anymore

    ReplyDelete

  15. You are right... There are too few that do not become immune to seeing these kids as people.
    These are children. Human beings.
And while I understand the need for any good cop or doctor to be able to remove themselves from that fact when faced with many accidents and crimes, they need only to remember that these kids are human always.
We need to remember that these children will grow up one day. They will have 2 outcomes, either being completely humbled by their experiences, or by being completely hateful of other people.
    Even those that care.

  16. You said "sorry for such a Venomous, malicious and unpleasant comment Anna,"

It was a completely venomous, malicious and unpleasant blog to post too.
I do not delete comments like yours that are written from the heart, and especially about this.

i actually feel more sorry for the people that believe these kiddy rapists are needing our sympathy. These pervs only need to be on the receiving end of a shotgun to their privates as far as I am concerned.
    Then let them bleed out.

  17. So sad to be thinking that there would have been more. I was so focused on the 'catch' that I never even thought of that possibility.

There really IS no suitable punishment for people like that.
My own rendition would be found in my reply to Lester.

And thank you for stopping in!

  18. Between public notices and the sites, I know who these people are that are even remotely close to me.
Many of these are the 'kids' who got caught up in their own hormones though. The states do not differentiate, and you must go "in search of" to determine whether this is a real pedophile, or one that was dating a girl that was 17 to which her father objected.

I have learned that the ones close to me are of both varieties.
    Damn sad that.
