Congress clears historic health care bill

History is made!

"Widely viewed as dead two months ago, the Senate-passed bill cleared the House on a 219-212 vote, with Republicans unanimous in opposition.

Congressional officials said they expected Obama to sign the bill as early as Tuesday.

A second measure — making changes in the first — was lined up for passage later in the evening. That measure would go to the Senate, where Democratic leaders said they had the votes to pass it."

AMEN!

  2. Hi Anna...
Living in Canada, I don't have too much to say about your Government except to say that I really
like the President very much and I just wish people would give him a chance. It's very annoying
to see what grown people will do to him. Anyway, I'm so happy this bill passed and I'm hoping
and praying that all the Republicans will have to apologize for their rude behaviour!!! :) I sincerely
hope that all the adults and children who need health care will be able to get it now. Praise God~~~

  5. Praise God is right!

I like him too! And allow me to thank you for having the courage to stand and say it aloud!!!
For some reason there is an awful undercurrent here that many 'want' him to FAIL. This, with no allegiances to America either. That as long as he fails they will e happy?
    WHAT is that all about?

Then again, the people have, and are, giving him a chance- (First with his winning the election).
And now comes the all the BS that surely will e posted... He is strong.

I too am more than happy that his bill passed, and I have a gut feeling that people will look back on this and say the same things they did when Medicare and Social Security were passed.

As far as getting everybody on board, that will take a while- But there is more than HOPE now!

  7. I am so happy to have 'met' you, and many others, through this pressing last year, Mary.
You have patience where clearly I do not, and have taught me much.

  9. Nah. Let her rant.
In the natural, yet ironic, way of little miracles, Doubtfire will also benefit from this bill.
Unless she is upset that she will now have to pay for Cee's insurance until she's 26???
    Hmmm... Maybe that's it.

    Anne;

For the first time in our nation's history, Congress has passed comprehensive health care reform. America waited a hundred years and fought for decades to reach this moment. Tonight, thanks to you, we are finally here.

Consider the staggering scope of what you have just accomplished:

Because of you, every American will finally be guaranteed high quality, affordable health care coverage.

Every American will be covered under the toughest patient protections in history. Arbitrary premium hikes, insurance cancellations, and discrimination against pre-existing conditions will now be gone forever.

And we'll finally start reducing the cost of care -- creating millions of jobs, preventing families and businesses from plunging into bankruptcy, and removing over a trillion dollars of debt from the backs of our children.

But the victory that matters most tonight goes beyond the laws and far past the numbers.

It is the peace of mind enjoyed by every American, no longer one injury or illness away from catastrophe.

It is the workers and entrepreneurs who are now freed to pursue their slice of the American dream without fear of losing coverage or facing a crippling bill.

And it is the immeasurable joy of families in every part of this great nation, living happier, healthier lives together because they can finally receive the vital care they need.

This is what change looks like.

My gratitude tonight is profound. I am thankful for those in past generations whose heroic efforts brought this great goal within reach for our times. I am thankful for the members of Congress whose months of effort and brave votes made it possible to take this final step. But most of all, I am thankful for you.

This day is not the end of this journey. Much hard work remains, and we have a solemn responsibility to do it right. But we can face that work together with the confidence of those who have moved mountains.

Our journey began three years ago, driven by a shared belief that fundamental change is indeed still possible. We have worked hard together every day since to deliver on that belief.

We have shared moments of tremendous hope, and we've faced setbacks and doubt. We have all been forced to ask if our politics had simply become too polarized and too short-sighted to meet the pressing challenges of our time. This struggle became a test of whether the American people could still rally together when the cause was right -- and actually create the change we believe in.

Tonight, thanks to your mighty efforts, the answer is indisputable: Yes we can.

    Thank you,
    President Barack Obama

  13. Well, I hope this is going to be a very good thing for all involved because there are so many people without coverage now. The debate has been going back and forth of how people will be cheated or even denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions....I sure do hope that is NOT the case. I just wonder what happens to those of us who already have coverage through our employers? And for those that cannot even afford the so called monthly payments that I hear will be mandatory? I guess there will be many hiccups in the system before it all runs smoothly.

    *****

    It passed!!!!
Just moments ago, the House of Representatives passed a sweeping overhaul of our health care system—a major progressive victory that will rein in the worst insurance abuses and expand health care to 32 million Americans.1 Amazing. After decades of attempts, this is a historic achievement. The bill is far from perfect. But your work and that of progressives throughout this fight made it much stronger—even bringing it back from the dead when many Democrats were ready to give up in January.2 You should feel incredibly proud!
But we have one final push to make this week. There's one more crucial Senate vote to make key progressive fixes—many to help insure more low-income families—to the final package.
Can you sign our petition urging the Senate to move immediately to vote on the final piece of health care reform? Click here to sign the petition:
    http://pol.moveon.org/healthcare/getitdone/?id=19491-17313833-RVcaatx&t=3
The petition says: "The House has passed historic health care reform. Now it's time for the Senate to finish the job. Pass the final fixes to the health care bill immediately."
We wouldn't be at this historic juncture without you and so many other progressives. In the last year, MoveOn members held over 5,000 rallies and vigils, and deluged Congress with millions of petition signatures, emails, personal vi

  15. the President's letter sounds very good indeed, he really is a good speaker. I pray that this is the RIGHT thing, I voted for Hillary, lol....not him, but she is a democrat too. I really wanted her to win, but they are on the same side anyways. I hope one day we will have a woman President and then maybe we won't be at war anymore......but, that is a long shot to think that way. I know we sometimes have to be at war to preserve human rights....it just sometimes seems that it is all about the oil.

  16. What happens to you? You are one of many who keep your coverage Sweetie.

As far as people being cheated or denied, protecting those people is what this h/c bill is ALL about!

  18. The House just passed the health reform bill with a vote of 219-212.Click here to find out how your Representative voted:For the first time in history, a comprehensive health care bill has passed both Houses of Congress. The bill will give health care to 32 million Americans and save over 30,000 lives per year. And it will regulate the insurance companies so they can no longer deny care for pre-existing conditions, charge you more if you're sick, put limits on your benefits, or increase rates with impunity. Also for the first time, Members of Congress will have the choice of the same health care plans as millions of Americans.Click here to find out how your Representative voted and send them a note of thanks for their historic work if they voted for us, not the insurance companies:http://healthcareforamericanow.org/hvoteWe're almost there. Let's win this thing!

Of course if you do not wish to thank them, please feel free to turn down your own health option when the time comes that you will need it.
I promise that time will come, and you WILL need it.
Turn it down. I double dog dare ya.

  19. We will gladly keep Drew on Bruce's insurance until he's 26. Imagine the fear of each time your chornically ill child, who can't go to school or work to get his own insurance... gets sick and you go to the hospital holding your breath the insurance company hasn't dropped their coverage. Folks with healthy children need to get down on their knees and pray their children stay that way!

    ReplyDelete
  20. so can we insure our children even if they don't live with us? just wondering.....

  23. you know..... I think that one of the things that make this country great is that people have fought hard so that you have the right to voice your own opinion...

that said, I think that it is pretty rude to walk into someone's celebration and take a crap on it.

You may be right and you may be wrong but you couldn't hold your tongue and let Anne enjoy something that will be (from all indications) and VERY VERY good thing for her and her family?

    Rude.

  24. I have highlighted your entire comment, but know that your last sentence speaks volumes!
"Folks with healthy children need to get down on their knees and pray their children stay that way!"

There is no concept for them of this... And I believe it i because it was easier to believe the lies than it was to do the research on the whole thing.
Or like a kid learning about sex, they just believed everything their buddies told them.
Yeah, we ALL know how reliable that info is...

I don't have to imagine your fears- I have lived them for too long.
Casey WAS dropped from her Dad's insurance in the middle of October 2006/7. I'm not sure which year it was.
(Damn fine thing at that point I could still pay to have her meds, and her hospitalizations etc etc etc).

I don't know if she will be able to be put back on her sires health insurance or not- She s only 23, but I can't remember what all I had read about that.
If she IS able to do that, I promise you there will be a godawful fight about it. He didn't think he had to pay past 18, and was p*ssed that she wanted to go to college... blah blah blah

Thankfully we learned it at the pharmacy, and not as she was being admitted to the hospital.

  26. Tickled PINK is right! hehehe

Here is one quote that I had found myself nodding in agreement to a while back: "Everyone I know wants healthcare. Do you want your premiums to keep going up? Do you want to be dropped by your insurance company when you get sick or have an accident? Do you want to be denied healthcare because a cold is considered a pre-existing condition? The health insurance companies are the biggest contributors to the Republican party and nobody calls it what it is- BRIBERY?"  end quote

It kind of explains a lot of bs that went on.
And I knew I wasn't alone in how I felt about this all.
