Casey. Very BAD reaction to Ferrlecit

Just an update...
Casey was given her Ferrlecit
infusion yesterday afternoon/evening...

As usual, they run this very slowly; and since she is sensitive to it, they also give her 50 mgs benedryl before even beginning.

Over the course of those 4 hours, she did quite well, save for a bout of diarrhea.
She had only 12 minutes left on it when the benedryl gave up, and she immediately broke out in hives from head to toe.
She had excruciating pain in every joint in her body-

We rang the nurse, who stopped the IV, and also withdrew the last of the Ferrlecit that was in her neck.
Within minutes she was given 50 mgs more of benedryl, and a bolus of her pain meds for the overwhelming joint pain she had.

Before I left last night she was given 50 mgs more benedryl, and her normal pain meds.
I have yet to hear from her this morning-

Please keep her in your good thoughts and prayers.
Love to all

XOXO
Me

Anyone that knows Casey, knows that her ankles and legs are very slim and trim...

Full Body Hives- Ankles missing.

This is what happened within a minute-
- - - The pain. The swelling. The hives.

  3. Wow, so sorry about the bad reaction. I hate that the medicines we have to take to make us well, sometimes have such bad effects on us.

  7. I've had the hives. And how that feels on the inside is definitely NOT pleasant! Good place to be when that happens is right where she was.

Hope everything has cleared up by now and that swelling has gone down.

  8. Have they tried Vistaril ( I like it better than Benedryl) for this? Its what they give me when I break out in hives..either the no reason ones or the ones caused by Latex or shellfish. Makes me hurt for her.
I hope she's feeling much better from this reaction by now.
    Hugs to you all!

  10. Talking, replying to myself here... It seems that she has done this before when I had posted that I hadn't heard from her- Then as soon as I write that, she calls.
    And no, she wasn't online...

  12. Through the grace of God, and a very strong will, Casey pulls through it all, and with her own grace too.
Like when the nurse came in the room, and Casey said, "I need Benedryl, NOW!"
There is a certain inflection in her voice that she gets that says, 'do not even think to question me, just do as I say.'
And yes, those nurses just sprung into action! I was very impressed.

  13. You have made a very very good point. Sometimes the side effects aren't worth it- But given the necessity of a decent blood count,... Oh I just don't know what her options will be from now on.
The vagotomy will also deplete her ability to use vitamin B-12.
We just HAVE TO stay up to date on every little new thing is all.

  14. OMG, and it was ALL OVER her body!

The nurse had just changed her dressings- not 3 minutes earlier and had left the room-
At that point, Casey had already asked why her wounds felt so strange and bumpy. No one knew and we all just thought it was a reaction to the dressings on them. The nurse cleaned them very well, taking care not to hurt her more.
As we now know, it was the beginning of a severe allergic reaction...

    And yes, it was horrid!

  15. I know- I am so glad I was up there- and not napping to have gotten that phone call from her would have sent me in the ditch on the way there... maybe.

  17. Oh Ugh! I have a newfound respect for anyone that suffers so.
I think it's the swelling of the joints that causes the pain.
I am ok, save for bee stings, and they hurt enough, just in the area where I am stung- I can only imagine how bad it feels to have a body full of this!

You are right. She was absolutely in the best place for her to have reacted so badly.

  18. She can't use many things because of her islet cells. They are such delicate things.
Vistaril has sorbitol in it, and that is just no good for anyone.
(Though I am glad it works for you)! hehehe

  20. Just came across your post...sometimes we play our own doctor on google and find our own answers. I was given Ferrlecit and had a severe allergic reaction. Hives and joint pain and swollen joints so bad I looked like a deformed person for 2 days. I later did research on other medication. I was getting a B-12 shot ever 2 weeks since 2001. When I had surgery I stopped taking it for a couple of months. When I gave myself that shot I felt awful..achy and just ill again. I did some research and found that my B-12has the same preservative that the Ferrlecit has in it that they think makes me sick. (Its called benzyl alcohol) and BY THE WAY THE SAME PRESERVATIVE IS THE BENYDRYL THEY GIVE YOU TO TRY TO CONTROL AN ALLERGIC REACTION! I get a different Iron IV every 8 months because of my condition with no allergic reaction now. The only difference between the two medications is that the ferrlecit has no benzyl alcohol in it and I have no reaction to it. Best of luck! heyjude32867@gmail.com
