[My] Life in Wisconsin

Ferrlecit Reaction- (part two)?

Sputty. (With "cattitude")...

Good Afternoon!
As you know from yesterdays blog, Casey had a very bad reaction to her infusion on Wednesday evening.
It's pretty damned bad when suddenly your own body no longer fits in your own skin!
She was so very swollen, and had so much pain everywhere. The swelling in her joints being almost as bad as the hives and the other swollen parts.
Unfortunately, she can only have benedryl as the rest of the stuff is steroids. As Robin was good enough to point out after Casey had tried the Infed infusion, Casey cannot have those treatments because steroids ultimately kill off her precious islet cells.

It happened again last night. The same thing! This, 24+ hours after her infusion was stopped. Again, she took the 50 mgs benedryl and her pain meds as prescribed. Finally, about 4AM the swelling began to go down. She is sleeping for now- I will wake her about 3 or so to make sure that we don't have a repeat of last nights insomnia. I would fall asleep a bit, then awaken; and she was still up. Even after another 50mgs of the benedryl...
The only difference this time is that now we are home. The Minneapolis forecast called for flurries yesterday. No big deal that, as flurries are almost a way of life in Winter.
But the forecast was wrong.
The weather turned a 4 and a half hour drive into almost 8 hours. Kelli remarked that we must have brought it with us because it didn't start snowing in Flintville until 20 minutes before we got home. hehehe
We followed that weather all the darn way home!!! Saw one lone snowplow spreading salt, and just west of Wausau, WI; otherwise the roads were not treated in our direction. (I must add that we counted 8 or 9 plows heading west, plowing and salting).  We saw a few crashes along the way- only one that the car had passed me previously. Being a fan of "late", (in the choice of 'late' or 'never'), I just took my time; stopping every now and then for a potty break. (And medically necessary to unwind my knuckles for a short time).
No stopping in Ringle for Punks potty break either.
I did stop every now and then for gas- Not needed, save for a few extra pounds added to the car.

As I wrote to my KelliBaby this morning, Mr Sputnik couldn't make up his mind whether to sleep upstairs or down last night. ('Course neither could Casey, so she was awake all night long).
Grrr...
One might be tempted to think that 2 days post surgery that one would want to sleep. Not so with herself...
hehehe
I wonder now, if it was pre-hives, the allergy, that kept her awake, the trip, the surgery, or a combination of everything?  Probably that combination.

I still have dishes to do- Left over from before we left, my back not being accommodating enough at that point to stand and scrub. (How's that for an excuse)?!
hehehe
Will get to those after I go in search of a few fresh groceries. The darned dishes will keep a few more hours, and are soaking in bleach water for now.

I would put off the shopping until after the dishes if we weren't to be expecting about 4" of new snow today. I drove far enough in the darn weather yesterday and don't wish to be driving any more than I have to today.
The sun was out earlier, but it is cloudy now. Imagine the snow will start soon.

That said, I had better close.  I hope everyone is safe and warm. And I thank you ALL for your letters, notes, and gifts, for Casey. What grand family and friends we have! Thank you! Thank You!! THANK YOU!!!

My love to all.

XOXO
Me

  1. Sorry about Casey but now listen Anne you can't put the dishes off till after shopping and the shopping off till after dishes...I mean that sounds like a good plan all except for the fact that there wont be any food or any plates to eat the non existent food out of...hmm I guess that does work out after all

  5. Sweet Suzy-
You would know about the treacherous drives we have around these parts. hehehe
But oh, it just seemed endless between Eau Claire and Wausau- Then again between Wausau and Shawano.
Worse when the daylight is gone too.

  9. I'm so glad you are home again but am remorseful that I never got a card into the mail. Tell Casey she had at least four mental greetings from me, and the pitiful excuse that I haven't sent Christmas cards in decades.

I know drug induced insomnia quite well and it's a misery. I hope she can sleep tonight back home in Flintville.

  10. Hi Mommy! AND Everyone on here!!

Thank GOD we got through both of these reactions!!! Boy did that scare the daylights out of me... How it must have scared you as well, seeing it happen and being strong enough to keep telling me that "It's all going to be okay" and that I'd be fine, while you're praying/hoping/wishing that this really is true!!

The benadryl worked, both times, so we should be out of the woods... Just glad it happened while I was in the hospital and while they had IV benadryl ready to go right away... This second episode that happened at your house wasn't nearly as bad as the episode in the hospital, but still swelled up both ankles and my knees as well.... OYE!!!!

Leave it to me to be allergic to iron!!! Most who are allergic to the IV iron have an instant reaction to it... Whereas I had very mild reactions that got worse and worse with each infusion until this last time when "BOOM" everything swelled up and I got a coating of hives from head to toe... The migraines are coming with this last transfusion as well, but hopefully they'll calm down in the next couple of days... I'll be glad when they do die down...

So far everything seems to be healing well, the incisions are still tender, but then again I did just have surgery a week ago... Nothing like healing from the big incision though!!! However, I do need to remind myself to not push things! I think we both over~did things the other day, and we're paying for it now... I keep praying that your pain lightens up and goes away, and one of these days some medical advancement has got to happen for people with back problems!!

In the meantime, we'll keep trooping on and getting each other through the tough spots, right? Along with the help of all the people in our lives who send us love and strength, we've got an army of loved ones to help!!

THANK YOU to everyone who sent out cards, thoughts, prayers and all else!!! I'll be writing to y'all to send you a proper "thank you" note, but wanted to send a quick one out on here tonight!

Well, I'm going to lie down, get rid of this migraine and give my body more time to heal... Hope all is well in everyone's neck of the woods!

To Mommy, I'm sorry we didn't make it out to get my car tonight... Just feeling too crappy yet, and you're right about having to drive in the dark both ways, so we'll worry about that later... Give me a call if you need anything, otherwise I'm going to read, fall asleep, and give you a call tomorrow... Love you MUCH MUCH!!!! *MORE* :)

    Love and Hugs to Everyone!

  13. Sweet JoAnna;
Oh! I was SO happy too, to take that final turn into the driveway! It was a long long drive...
    Too long-

No bad feelings allowed for the missing card. Your heart is always in the right place!

Greg picked her up on Sunday night, and they went to their home.
More snow then, and I was quite "snowed in" until Jim came earlier to plow me out.

  17. I told ya so!
Though I thank you for all of your help, you should not have come outside to shovel that damnable snow.

  18. It is simply called love and friendship Baby Girl.
We all love you, ya know!

  19. Not to worry about your car.
I moved it to in front of the back door so it would take the brunt of the snow off the walk, so I wouldn't have to shovel there.
Just please move it before you clear it off?!? hehehe

Heal well my Sweet Little One.
    Sleep well too.

    I love you more.

    XOXO
