[My] Life in Wisconsin

Fall "Fire" and Fun!

Good Morning All!

Waking up this morning I was a bit chilly... Windows open and drafting on me too. (47 degrees, you would be chilly too)! The Punkster was all snuggled up by Casey. And they BOTH came down shortly thereafter. (Yes, I can share my quiet time)! hehehe
Casey stole the computer and was online for a bit, and then to call my godson too! She left a message on his cell at that ungodly hour. But he is home for only a short time, and she had to touch base with him... Especially after having such a dream about him too. (No, not THAT kind- Just an innocent dream).

Then right back upstairs those kids went; ~dog, cat, and daughter!

Now, does anyone know what kind of bush that is in the top picture? I'd planted it a few years back, and promptly forgot what the name of it is.
Guess I will call it "George" then.
Hahaha, a "George Bush"???
(Man, sometimes I crack myself up without even trying)!
>Pass more caffeine please<

More walking yesterday. But learned that in order to get back to the woods, (and home again), that we take the car back to begin with.

After a lovely afternoon, we all went back to the woods.

.

.

Not quite 'crunchy' yet as we have had many rains...
But almost perfect for color!
.
.
Casey playing "Keep Away"...
.
.
Wee "fire"!
.
.
Sumac. Maple. Oak.
And still so much green!
.
.
HUGE "Tarzan" vines in an old oak tree.
.
.
A deep run~off at the SE end of the field goes all the way down the ravine.
(Methinks the snowmobiles had better stay on the trails this winter)...
.
.
Driving back from the east end of the old farm~
~ as the skies threatened more rain.

.

.

Back at the house again, to find a gaggle of mushrooms in the backyard

.

A "Smurf City" perhaps?
Methinks I should be out there mowing???
hehehe
Casey played more with the pooches...
Tossing the ball up on the hip roof of the old shed.
And they are so patient... (mostly)...
As she throws in all the way over; and they wait. And wait. And WAIT...

.

.

They just don't quite understand the 86~feet~per~second law of gravity.
They wait some more... (as Casey laughs herself almost hysterical)!

.

Night settled in and we walked a bit... to the old barngrade.
.
Without those orbs, it just would not have been so great a picture!
.

Yes, we do have many orbs around the old farm. Inside and outside too. Would anyone want to venture to tell me why? Going through some old pictures too I have seen a few oddities. Casey spotted one yesterday as she had posted her entry.

It is hard to see in the small picture, so here is a repost of my Jello~Face~Kid.
.
.
No wonder the poor kid is crying!
.
What IS behind her peeking out of that closet???
.
This picture was taken when we lived in the townhouses in Ashwaubenon;
So no, we do not have anything like that here...
.

So not much news from Flintville. Yesterdays high was in the mid 70's perfect for playing, but my danged fat foot refused to cooperate. I will call in today, but AFTER my little chores are done... (Just on the off~chance he somehow makes it totally useless)! hehehe

Hope your weekend was perfect! Have a WUNNAFUL Monday!

Please either let me know about the "bush" or the closet? (I only kept coats in there so the girls would not misplace them)...

XOXO
Anne

Sidnaw, Michigan

Good Morning All!

I have found a few more pictures from times past in Sidnaw, Michigan.

For my newfound friends in lower Michigan and in Germany too. I hope they will kindly add their own thoughts and ideas and memories too...

This is a picture of my mothers homeplace in Upper Michigan.

.

.

Picture is dated 1948,
you can still see how they lived.

.

.

The following picture to show the lay of the land on their farm. The house being toward the top on the right...

.

This is my grandfather, (Franciscus Corneel ~Cornell~ VandenPlas), with my Aunt Loretta (Mrs. Harry Worden).

.

.

After leaving the old homestead, my grandfather built the little cottage in the background here; and lived there until he was no longer able to care for himself. They found him one January with a frozen shoulder; and in the company of another man who had sought refuge for the winter. Very little heat~ Not enough food for sustenance. They were both taken from there, but I am not sure of the year;(in the mid~1950's).

.

.

Sidnaw, Michigan; picture is dated Oct. 18, 1953
And captioned by my mother "Us Lumberjacks!"
Mama is on the left.

.

.

My grandparents had divorced years before.
Unheard of in that day and age~ (I never learned of this until I was divorced in 1979/1980, and Mom shared this family 'secret' with me as I was going through my 1st divorce). My grandparents lived at one of the local nursing homes in Green Bay. They had separate rooms. More feeble, but still they were able to come and visit on occasion providing they had transportation to/from the home.

.

.

Francis VandenPlas, and Zoe (Radart), VandenPlas
Photo taken in the early 1960's

.

.

The decision was made after their deaths to sell the old homestead. All of the children (7), had long since relocated, were married, and had children of their own.

.

.

The house, still standing after years of neglect;
sans windows, doors and entryway.
The outbuildings and barns also stood.
Photo dated 1970

..

In the mid 1960's, a dear sweet couple, (originally from Germany, and 1st generation Americans), had bought the homeplace.

.

.

.

.

Their names were Karl and Hilde Johnssen.

Sadly, they never had children of their own, but AS children we always looked forward to seeing them~ Much like our own grandparents who, by that time were gone from our young lives. (I was 5 when Grandpa died in Spring, and had turned 5 by the time grandmother died in the Fall; about 7 months later).

Karl had worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit until he retired.

Hilde was a short, little, lovely woman who knew everything. And I say that with the utmost respect.
Hilde had had a brain tumor in her 40's. After her doctors had removed the tumor this strong woman had to learn EVERYTHING all over again! Much as a baby would, she had to even learn to crawl before she could walk. Karl stood by her side every step of the way.

And learn she did! There was simply NOTHING that you could 'stump' this woman on! Nor was she ever afraid of anything.

Hilde and Karl both hunted. And many times it was Hildegard that slayed the venison or the bear! But it didn't matter, as long as they had food on their table.

.

Karl and Hilde had plans of their own for the place. Not wanting to destroy any of the history of the place, but having no use for a barn, they simply decided to turn the old barn into their home!

.

.

The foundation was solid, although they would pour additional concrete for the flooring...

.

.

Before renovation. An undated photo.
(Would any of you know the production years of these vehicles)?

.

.

.
Karl on the right; with an unknown helper, securing the beams.
.
Work began in earnest.
And yes, Hilde pitched in as well.

.

.

And soon a home began to emerge where the old barn had once stood!

.

.

Rear of home...

.

.

Front of home.
Uncle Walter Nooyen, Hilde, Mama, and Karl

.

.

Uncle Walter married my Aunt Florence. (She was the eldest of the VandenPlas children). He preceded her in death. My Aunt Florence lived until May of 1998. My own mother passed away that very same November.

I will blog more about these dear people, but for now must get my day moving.

But, I promised a special picture for my cousin in Germany at Ramstein Air Base.

.

.

Aunt Florence and Uncle Walter Nooyen
ENJOY!

.

I hope you all have a grand Thursday. It is in the low 60's here, and LOTS of wind and rain. (I am amazed that the power has not gone out)... >knocks on wood<

Love to all!

XOXO
Anne

Flintville~vs~Sidnaw?

Good Morning All;

Yes, (and regrettably at times), I am still alive! hehehe
On top of my foot, (no pun intended), I have been under attack by my stupid head.
(>CLICK< for Migraine info "Myths vs Reality").

On the very bright side, I have not had to take my 'foot' pills since yesterday morning. Happy about that~ Only a few days ago I had actually watched the clock for when I could take another pain pill. It feels better, (as does my silly head) now. I took the boot off, and have been back to "gimping" so much better than I have for a few weeks. I have not been brave enough to wear a shoe though...

My foot is still very rOund. hehehe
(Hmmm... I wonder if one can get stretch marks on their feet)?!? Might as well, after carrying 4 kids Lord only knows I've got those marks every place else! hehehe
The foot sure swolled up, and stayed that way too. One of the bodys little miracles to keep the fracture safe I suppose...
No, I have not yet returned for that next x~ray.

Not too much news... The brunt of it is covered in Caseys blog anyway... YAY!
(What a copout for me, eh)? Lucky that way!!!

Oh, and my halloween comic... (I stole all of these 'funnies' from an email last year, so feel free to steal away)!!!

.

.

hehehe

.

.

Been checking on a few more emails, and I see that Yahoo! has posted another blog on the life expectancy of our little 360~World.
Please go and make your voices heard once more.

>CLICK HERE< for their new blog. No, don't do it now... Wait til after you leave me a comment!

Of newsworthiness too... (And celebrating his 249th birthday somewhere), is none other than Noah Webster... (Info stolen from HERE).

America's first lexicographer, was born on October 16, 1758.
We remember Webster as the author of the first American dictionary, but he was also the first authority to advocate American English.
His American Spelling Book, published in 1783 (later known as Webster's Elementary Spelling Book), was the first to Americanize the spelling of English words such as colour and labour by dropping the u.
He also espoused American pronunciation and usage. In a very real sense, Webster gave us the language that Americans think of as English.
An estimated 60 million copies of Webster's speller were sold during its first hundred years in print. In 1828, Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language was published, with 12,000 more words and about 40,000 more definitions than any previous English dictionary.

As I type, I wonder where ANY of us would be without him all those years ago?.

.

On an unrelated topic, I had previously written about a man, now living in lower Michigan, who had contacted me regarding the stories I had written about my mother, and her birthplace, Sidnaw, Michigan. Seems it was his birthplace too and he had found my blog doing a search on the internet.

I have since received still another letter. This time from a gentleman in Germany who had also grown up in Sidnaw... Oddly enough, and all the way from Germany, he has met one of my cousins at his work across the big pond!!! WOW!

WHAT A SMALL WORLD WE LIVE IN!
And yes, I will be posting more about Sidnaw now that I can hobble my way up to the attic to grab some pictures! Since it has been raining for the past couple of days, I believe I will be doing that today!

Mama "got" me again here. All I wanted to do here was to put Flintville, Wisconsin on the map! hehehe But I have a feeling Sidnaw, Michigan will be just as much fun!

Have a "Wunnaful~Wednesday" !!!!

Love to all.

XOXO
Anne

Deaf Mountain Goats...

Master Gabriel!!! hehehe

.

.

Good Morning Everyone!

In keeping with the season, I have to post this picture too!

.

.

HAHAHA... (I actually HAD an "Uncle Joe")...

.

.

The pictures in this blog were all taken on Saturday... (yesterday was nasty, and I will get to that later).

.

.

Berta had stopped out with Gabriel before she had to go in for work... She has been working many overtime hours and has been almost an invisible entity.

Gabriel was very excited to meet the kitty. Or as he says, "KEE~TEE"... (Notice he didn't even bother taking his jacket off)!

.

.

The Master. The Mother. ...(And The Mouser)!

.

.

Of course he might have kept his coat on, knowing that we would inevitably end up outside. We all chatted while he busied himself picking some flowers for Mama and Grandma too!

.

.

Offering his prize pick!

.

.

And here he is again, posing under the willow tree!

.

.

A "CHEESEFACE" for his Mama!

.

.

Then I think he was making fun of me, and my way too painful foot...

.

.

He actually 'limped' around the car as he used Punks stick for a 'cane'.
sadly, it was freakin' hysterical...

.

.

But both dogs came to my defense with their own little bits of support...

.

.

Cnv1029............Cnv1040
Winks from both Mama Milly AND The Punk...

.

.

And on to yesterday...

Gabriel arrived about quarter after eight. And he was in FULL Assault Form of those 'terrible twos' too. (And he seemed to be taken completely "deaf" as well)...

I came back here to rearrange his little car that turns into a wagon; (took me long enough to figure out "how" to do it too). He laughed at me. He then pushed it out into the kitchen and to the living room. In the meantime, I had quick clicked "home" on my page here to see if anyone was on, or had commented on my blog. Gone for no longer than a minute, I hear him shaking something, and go out to the dining room. He was standing on the bar table (4 feet up!!!), and was using the flyswatter to try to hit a bug on the ceiling! (Heart Attack City for me)... YOKES! Now he's a deaf mountain goat???

...And high time to be getting in the shower too. He put his blanket in the bathroom, and contented himself playing with my "boot" while I showered. Casey woke up in the meantime, and we decided to take a ride to see Rick. (Gabriel LOVES his Grandpa too)! I should have thought to bring the camera, but didn't; not with all the "terrible~two~ing" going on around here...

We witnessed a miracle though... While we were there, Gabriel seemed to recover BOTH his hearing, and his manners!!!

Hmmm....???? hehehe

...We left at halftime, (about 1:30); but never made it home until about 7:30. I think Casey missed her doctors so much that we ended up at St. Marys Hospital once more... (She had SO much pain all over again). She was shaky, nauseous;, and once again, her eyesight was blurred. She was weak. Sweaty. Pale like death. And of course they only treated her pain.

Her blood tests were mostly normal... Her lipase/amylase count was up a little, but maybe this is normal for Chronic Pancreatitis? In the meantime I had called Robertas friend Jessica. She picked Gabriel up without hesitation. She called Berta too because Berta was to the hospital within the hour.

So to "follow up with her regular doctor" today or tomorrow. Blah~Blah~Blah... Would somebody PLEASE just get us a damned diagnosis already? I am so tired of hearing the word "ideopathic" ...
*Kind of a catch~all to replace "we have no idea what's really wrong because we are all idiots." (Followed closely be, "here's the address to send your check to.").

Damn.

She is still asleep, wanting to be woken for 7 because she has 2 LONG re~interviews today, beginning at 9. Two different companies. Please wish her well. And maybe a little prayer or two?

It's almost 7 now for crying out loud... Must fly...

Have a great Monday, or I shall have to send the dogs, (and Uncle Joe), to be cheering you up as well!

XOXO
Anne

.

Happy Hallow/Horse Sense?

Sad, but true!

.

.

Good Morning All!

The sun is already out, the thermometer claiming it to be 40°, Gabriel will be here within the hour... And all is well. 'cept for my stupid foot that is... And time will fix that one.

I did get out and about yesterday, But (sorry Sweet Pam), we didn't get back to the woods. The boys were hunting back there; the dogs and I decided it would not be prudent with respect to our hides to mosey on to the woods or the river.

So we stayed up front. Lord knows there is more than enough to get done up here. And I didn't even have my camera! (The Casey kid had stolen it). So you will just have to picture the dogs 'helping' me out in the garden. Punk helping herself to some old corncobs... And she even picked them herself, right off the stalks! Funny

I really do not have to blog today, as I see CaseyFace has done it all for me already. Complete with pictures and all!!!

Please >CLICK HERE< or on her name above, and see what happened in our little Flintvillian town yesterday!

Hey Casey, life is tough... get a helmet!
hehehe

Oh wait... you have just gotten one...

.

.
Kelli on May; Casey on "Breeze~Along"...

.

.

And her blog!!!
hehehe (I might have even added a bit of side~stepping when she wrote of her sassy horse)!

.

.

Caseys Feet!!! Ready to side~step?
(Now go ask her about her derrière)!
.
.
.
.

Frost on My Computersaurus?

I kid you not, I actually had this prehistoric version of Yahoo! email...

.

.

Good Morning All;

A raunchy day yesterday with my technical issues... And I have NO idea how my computer got all screwed up. But one phone call to Yahoo! fixed it completely.

Hard to find that number, so here it is for anyone having problems with their Yahoo. 1-866-722-3425

The gal I spoke to, (second tier), was very kind and helpful; and even had a decent sense of humor. I was, and remain, impressed.

But I was having other issues too. Between my silly foot and my stupid head, I did end up going in for a shot. AND, Casey even asked them for a boot... My doctor had already gone for the weekend, but they gave me one anyway...

.

.

Cute eh? The newest in Flintville Fashion!!!
Please forgive the glazed smile; I had just gotten that shot...
(Even my foot felt better after that injection)! hehehe

.

.

.

When I awoke this morning, my head was much better; and, having slept with the boot on, so was my foot. Kinda nice to wake up that way too!

Maybe, just maybe, I can actually even get some work done around here today... AND take the dogs back to the woods! The high is to be around 58°, nice and sunny too!

It is 33° as I type. Seems chilly in here too, but I have not heard the furnace kick in even once since I woke. (Hang on)... Back now, it was a whole 62° in here. (And yes, I turned that darned furnace on)...

Been finding some interesting reading on this wonderful "WWW"...

I also came across a site called LifeTips.

As I shouldn't be so grounded and immobile anymore, I shall get busy then! Tired already of sitting on my backside in the name of 'healing'. hehehe

Hope you are all having a grand weekend!

Now, would somebody please go dancing for me????

Hmmm... You think you don't have anyone to go dancing with? Here is a bit of help for you shy (and some NOT so shy), people... Casey has posted an entire blog of pick~up lines for you! hehehe CLICK HERE to read those!
...And DO let me know if they work!!!!

So my question of the day is: What is/was your own best pickup line?

XOXO
Anne

.

Sledge Hammers and Band-Aids

Not sure, but I don't think a band-aid will help...

.

.

Good Morning All;

I am terribly late here; having been up half the night with my stupid foot... It does feel like someone has hit it with a sledgehammer, or dropped anchor on it. Either way I am quite 'grounded' to say the very least...
...AND I HAVEN'T BEEN GROUNDED SINCE I WAS 17!!!
(Someday I might tell you 'what for')...

I recently asked Miss Marie for her foot immobilizer, but remember now that she has these itty~bitty feet. (She had come to visit CaseyAnne at Froedtert and I remember telling her how little her feet were). She has recently had surgery and had to wear "the boot" that I am now coveting.

Me? ...with a size 10, I have feet sized only for yetis and mukluks.

I have been doing a ton of reading and researching on here. I have learned much about my foot...

.

.

I am guessing that since it is my 2nd metatarsil that is hurting so badly that this picture, (stolen from here), is as close to what is going on with my own foot.
Except mine is the left foot...
(Look at this picture in a mirror should that fact bother you at all)!
hehehe

.

.

I found a whole bunch of websites that were a bit tough to get through. (All that medical dialogue I can basically understand; but it slows down my slow reading)...

In short, (and on an 8~year~old level)...
...Stress fractures are quite common in the foot. A stress fracture simply implies that the load applied to the foot was greater than what the bone could tolerate, so it breaks. hehehe I am thinking it is time for me to lose some weight... ya think?

And this, from that same website... "X-rays are necessary but aren't always so helpful with metatarsal stress fractures. In most cases, metatarsal stress fractures can only be seen on x-ray three to four weeks after they occur. X-ray findings of stress fractures are very subtle. We don't actually see the fracture, but we see the deposition of calcium surrounding the fracture as the bone heals.

Most stress fractures of the foot will heal over time with just a little help. How long? Patients are usually surprised to find out that stress fractures take 8-12 weeks to heal."

WHAT?!?! ...
(I am MORE than upset, saddened, by that statement).
The dogs are already upset that we haven't been going to the woods every day.

.

And yet, I really DO have good news too... Having fallen to sleep at one point, I was awakened by a very loud noise. ...Good grief, and now what the heck??? And then remembered that I had set the trap just in case that little varmint had somehow lived through his 2nd Degree Sputty~Assault... (See yesterdays blog)... Apparently he did live through it. But he didn't live through the trap! (Say "YAY")? hehehe

Have a great Thursday!

XOXO
Anne
