Honoring Native Americans on Thanksgiving « Transition Times

http://bethechange2012.wordpress.com/2011/11/24/honoring-native-americans-on-thanksgiving/

by Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez on November 24, 2011 •

Thanksgiving in the U.S. is about gathering together with friends and family and giving thanks for being able to stuff oneself with a huge meal.

It’s one of the most important holidays of the American capitalist religion, second only to “Christmas.”

Its founding myth is the fateful meal shared by the indigenous peoples of Massachusetts with the starving English Pilgrims.  The Pilgrims “gave thanks” at that meal for the generosity of their hosts, and thus was born the tradition of a November Thanksgiving feast.

To my way of thinking, Thanksgiving should actually be a day of atonement marked by fasting, in the spirit of Yom Kippur, Lent or Ramadan.

We Euramericans should be reflecting and repenting on this day for the way our ancestors turned on their Native hosts, once the time of starvation was past.

We repaid their kind welcome with a shameful record of stealing, swindling, enslavement, displacement and deliberate infection.

We waged vicious war that slaughtered children and old people along with warriors both male and female.

We occupied their lands without a second thought, and proceeded to cut the primeval forests to make room for our livestock, roads and cities.

This pattern started with the Puritan Pilgrims in Massachusetts, and spread inexorably West, all the way to California and Texas, where indeed the brutal work had already been begun by the Spanish.

I don’t really expect Americans to give up the tradition of the jolly Thanksgiving feast.

But we do need to be mindful of the real historical background behind the custom of gathering to celebrate with family and friends.

American Thanksgiving is a holiday that honors the spirit of sharing the bounty.  When we dig into that heaped plate today, we should be giving thanks to the rich Earth that has nourished human beings for millennia, and for the Native peoples of this continent, who learned how to live in harmony with the flora and fauna of this place, cultivating the first corn, beans and squash, and craftily culling the abundant indigenous turkeys.

And we should pause in our feast to reflect on the ignoble history that unfolded after that original Thanksgiving in Plymouth MA, where America repaid her hosts not with honor, but with persecution, scorn and hate.

In the act of repentance springs redemption.  The indigenous people of this continent are not gone–they are alive and well and living among us.  Let us raise a glass to them today and give them the honor and thanks they deserve.

I do not know Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez, nor do I believe i have ever read any of her other entries.
I plan to change that fact as soon as possible.

Please feel free to do any of the 'clicks' above. This is an amazing mindset; one we would all benefit from having within our hearts, every day.

Two questions for me...

Q's.
Why do you celebrate Thanksgiving?
Why a Turkey?

A's.
We really don't.. (And certainly not only because Casey can't eat much)...

But do not misunderstand either-  IMHO, there are plenty of days to be thankful each year- (365 or 366 days as a matter of fact...)-

http://flintville.multiply.com/journal/item/877/An_Ethical_Responsibility_to_Teachers_Parents_and_Students

Odd, there are same number of days for family to be together too.
for that article, please scroll down to "Now on to the topic at hand..."

And please, as always, place special and precious stock in the comments/replies.

Then here too: http://flintville.multiply.com/links/item/273/

Lots is repetitious Mr Bill-  But, ALL IS IMPORTANT- (which is why some of those blogs have been reposted).

NOTICE THE OBVIOUS LACK OF COMMENTS ON SOME OF THOSE?! (You must tell me *why* that is)?!
I think it is because too many people are afraid of something 'different'...
(Sad that).

Who really gives us our life?
Who really gives us our food and nurturing?
Who really allows us to be born?

We are born through our parents who act as the vehicle of life for the Creator and Mother Earth. Our parents take care of us for a little while and when we are ready we must leave them and be faithful to our true Father, the Creator, and our true Mother, the Earth. Then we need to be of service to the Creator and be respectful to Mother Earth.

Great Spirit, thank you for being my Father. Teach me to honor the Earth.

Good Morning Everyone!
Time for a "cuppa"! hehehe

I hope you all had a very Happy Thanksgiving!

We sure did.
That is, if you don't count the fact that dinner was supposed to be at 2PM- But that interfered with the Packer Game so no way for that time.
I rescheduled for 3- No wait, I wasn't ready at 3...
Also, don't count the burnt (adds flavor, right?) stuffing, the concrete mashed potatoes that I made after the first 'real' potatoes smelled funny to me. Sorry Greg, I am not used to making my taters out of a box, being in a hurry, and misreading the directions all at once.
I should have taken Greg up on his offers when he asked 1., If I needed any help; and 2., If I wanted him to make those taters.

While doing 'stuff', there came a ruckus from the living room...
.
.
Casey- Bring it on!

.
.

Just moments before there was sweet music coming from that old Hamilton piano...

Playing Piano

Bring it on "Chopped Liver"
(Oh wait, that's Kelli's nickname for Greg)...

Orb on KC's butt!
That's either an orb, or a target, on her backside...

Greg and Casey
After she was done beating Greg up they smooched and hugged. hehehe

Then we ate "yummo" turkey, potatoes and gravy, and stuffing too!
Mmmmmmmmm.......

Greg had doctored the concrete taters- And I still poured a wealth of gravy over mine. He even had 2nds-
(Wonder if he is well, or if those taters have since solidified in his stomach)?

I spent a ton of money yesterday!
Imagine that, me $pending money on Black Friday?!
But I just HAD TO!
AND, I spent it in record time too!  And we were home by about 9:30.

See, Sputty has been sneezing (gross), and wheezing, (scary). I called Dr. Spires on Wednesday and made that appointment...

Kelli stopped by really early yesterday- At one point she had my cat carrier, but one of her cats sorta destroyed it.  She has bought a new one; and had dropped it off about 5:30. (Not sure, but it was still dark, and Punk was still sleeping).

Sput in carrier
Sputnik in the carrier...

He did not mind being in there at all. Matter of fact since it is still here, he has slept in it twice already!

Not sure if he minded Doc Spires though...

Sput~N~Spires With Treat
Even after he was given that treat- (which of course he didn't eat because he cannot even smell it). But he kept an eye on the rear door to the room...
Waiting to make his escape.

No Thank you
After the "temp" was taken... hehehe

No fever- But an upper respiratory infection...
AND he has Rhinotracheitis
.
This is the medical term for herpes. wth?
From "cat world"
"
Most cats are infected with rhinotracheitis (feline herpes virus 1).  Estimates vary from 70% to 95% of cats being chronically infected but it is likely that it is closer to 90% than to 70%.  Cats are usually infected when they are young but because the virus is a herpesvirus it can live in the body long term and surface at times of stress or immune compromise."

Now the dang cat has pills too. (And oh what a wrestling match I had last night getting that pill down his throat).

Sputty Drugs

He has the Clavamox pills for the respiratory infection, (and some homeopathic goo for the other).

I'd better close for now...  Maybe nap before Kelli gets here to run the dogs for a bit. (Been up since 11:30).

Oh but I wasn't done...
On Thanksgiving, my desktop computer took a doo~doo and died. Dr. Greg took it all apart, and in moments had it dx'ed- A few moments later, after hooking up my laptop, he also had the part ordered for it.
Not sure how long it will take, given that it is formally holiday season now, what with shipping and all.
In the meantime, know that my pictures are wacky...

Again, I hope your Thanksgiving was grand! I look forward to reading all of your stories and such.

...And full steam ahead to Christmas! My tree will be set up soon.
I missed out on that last year, so I can set it up really early this year, right
?

Love to all.

Black Friday. Whose Fault Was It Anyway?

Good Chilly Morning;
Another sleepless night here- I have to get to Fleet Farm and get a chicken lamp for the water pit. I keep waking up to run water to make sure it doesn't freeze out there-
The high tomorrow is to be about 22.  ~Whoopdefreakin'doo~
Just too early for this all...

Now back to my title.
We have all heard the news, seen the tape, etc.
(CLICK HERE if your "rock" is bigger than mine).

Here's your question...

Who really IS responsible for that mans death at WalMart on Black Friday?

  • Is it WalMart? For example they didn't do enough to control the crowd... (Keep in mind the man that died was not an employee of WalMart, just hired on as extra security to help assist with crowd control).
  • Or the shoppers? By trampling this man to death...

Still not sure?

What if it had been a shopper that had died?
What if it had been a child?

Please let me know your thoughts.

XOXO
Anne

Turkey in DePere Today!

Good Morning!

I will probably be keeping this real short for today...  Casey is asleep upstairs- A rough day for her yesterday as she had her own migraine to tend to...  Two of my kids inherited them, the other two did not.

Caseys girlfriend Jenny M. is home for the holiday- Was  here last night then, and they watched a few movie... The two of them are going Christmas shopping tomorrow all day- Knowing Casey, she will go this one time (always organized) and get it all done at once. I am never that organized... Are you?

The picture is of my kitchen, turned salon on Thanksgiving.  Roberta highlighting Jennifers hair-    Jenne is much taller than Berta, Berta had wanted to check the 'doneness' of the lightening process... Jenne plopped right on the floor!  (I guess you had to be there, but it sure was funny)...

Zoe and Eric are hosting their own Thanksgiving this afternoon- Followed by Jennifers little 'going away' party!  And since the 30th is Isaiahs birthday, I am thinking that I should get to the store and get a little something... (Oh, they will be missed)!   Plans are for the three of them to leave bright and early Monday morning...

Mary (my sister), has already called- They will also be there!  Yay!  She is working 3 or 4 jobs, so who knew if they could make it or not!

Roberta, supposed to work this afternoon, will not be there- But I do have Master Gabriel here so at least he will be in attendance!

I am really looking forward to this all- Should be fun, Fun, FUN!!  (And I am even thinking that there will even be PIE)!

Unca BoBBie said he was stuck eating raspberry pie on Turkey Day-  (Oh, that poor man)!  I think right about now, I would exchange one of my daughters in exchange for a piece of that pie!  hehehe

Moms friend used to have a restaurant in the U.P. of Michigan; and he would always have fresh raspberry pie- EVERY day!  It wasn't often that we could get up that way, but we always stopped to have some pie when we did!  Dad always got the apple pie- with a chunk of cheddar to go with it- (None of that "ala mode" for him)... Mom and Mary were the Lemon Meringue kids, and I was 'stuck' with the raspberry pie then ALL to myself!

It occurs to me that I didn't even think to ask Zelda if Miss Valerie has gone up north this weekend...  Sam goes hunting, and so maybe she is up there- Maybe not-  And hopefully they got some venison... And no, Casey only saw that one deer on opening day, and David shot it!!! Oh well...

I had better get busy, as I must make a bit of breakfast- and then make some of the green bean casserole for our meal this afternoon! Zoe said her turkey is well over 22 pounds! I am not going to eat any of it though...

...I'm saving room for PIE!

I do hope you are all having wunnaful weekends!

XOXO

Anne

T-Day After! The Awful Void...

Hope your turkey (or filet mignon) was excellent!

As for me, I availed myself of the unseasonably warm temps and cleaned up the yard a bit. Had some branches cut last weekend that were left in the R/W of the ditch, and it was high time to pretty that up a bit. (Oh, who am I trying to kid? One cannot really 'pretty~up' these ditches)... But anyway, I did a bunch of clearing it all out; and have already started building my burn pile for next spring in the backyard.

The above picture is exactly what I have been seeing since I woke up at about 12:30 this morning...  And am very happy that I do not have to go driving in it- How ever do people see anything when it is SO foggy? This is Pea~Soup Fog, Folks-  I couldn't even see the darned kennel!

And yet, I know there are plenty of DieHard shoppers out there, already grabbing up the first bargains they can see- and fighting their way through the hoards of other shoppers.

Not me. Never did it, and hopefully will never have to either!

No way, NO how!

And it is NOT even the biggest shopping day of the year, as so many have proclaimed it to be... It hasn't ranked that way in recent history either.

Now as for yesterdays entry...

I was not too certain how to go about s~t~r~e~t~c~h~i~n~g  that little mouse with its broken neck into serving enough food for the minions that appeared on my doorstep in the afternoon... So I cheated and we might have eaten a bit of turkey; some mashed potatoes that Casey made- and a few other things too.  My GI tract is currently quite unhappy with all of that!  (Must have been that 'mousey mouse' gravy)? hehehe  Image

But NO PIE!!!   Image

How awful is that???   That's like bad 'secs' or something- It's just wrong, and what's the point anyway? !

The Fed-Ex guy didn't drop off any pie- Image

Nor did the airlines... Image

None was found in my mailbox- (or my inbox for that matter)- Image

I looked in the fridge. Image

I looked in the cupboards. Image

And I looked under my bed. (No wonder the damned cat died)... Image

Just NO PIE anywhere!!!   It gave me such bad dreams that I couldn't sleep, (overcome by this one little section of my tummy that was just so completely empty).

VOID OF PIE!!!  Image

Casey, Jenne, Isaiah, and Roberta came out- (& they didn't bring pie either).   Image

Berta did Jenne's hair... putting the highlights in, and on Sunday she will be cutting it also-  Hopefully she will have time to also cut mine- Am thinking about shaving it off if I cannot come up with a style I like.   (Um, sorry, no 'double~dog~dares' will be accepted)!

And so, it is onward and upward to Christmas, and the New Year too...  That makes me tired even thinking about it all; and like some of my compadres on here I shall be at least thinking of finding those decorations...

...maybe anyway...

Time to jump start my day!

...(and YAY!, Casey has just come in)!!!

A Rodent For Repast!

gotcha...
hehehe...
And finally!!!! ...
Our Thanksgiving meal is secured!

YAY! (I was worried there for a while)...

There is a bittersweet end to this varmint. Meal for him, meal for us! How cool is that? And hopefully his family will read this, and see what will happen should they decide to enter my home! Din Din Morris!

I believe I might have even slept past 1:37 this morning had my cell phone not kept continually reverberating with a new text message for me... After I crawled out of bed- (ok, 'off of couch') I checked the text... It was from Jenne, and said simply, "Happy Thanksgiving!"

And really Folks, that is enough Thanksgiving wishes for me! Although I thank you all for them, I have received a thousand reminders that I need to find something to be thankful for or I am unpatriotic or even un~Christian- Hence, un~American... (The thought itself brings on a whole slew of attitude for me)! After all, being Indian, how much more 'American' can one get?

And yet, that said, George Carlin begs to differ...

Across my desk from Cousin Buttercup aka "Nishgiggles"...
George Carlin on Indians.....

"Now the Indians. I call them Indians because that's what they are. They're Indians. There's nothing wrong with the word 'Indian'.

First of all, it's important to know that the word Indian does not derive from Columbus mistakenly believing he had reached 'India.'
India was not even called by that name in 1492; it was known as "Industan".
More likely, the word Indian comes from Columbus's description of the people he found here. He was an Italian, and did not speak or write very good Spanish, so in his written accounts he called the Indians:
"Una gente in Dios."
(Translated): "A people in God."
In God. In Dios.
Indios. Indians.
It's a perfectly noble and respectable word.

As far as calling them 'Americans' is concerned, do I even have to point out what an insult this is? -----
We steal their hemisphere, kill twenty or so million of them, destroy five hundred separate cultures, herd the survivors onto the worst land we can find, and now we want to name them after ourselves? It's appalling!

Haven't we done enough damage?
Do we have to further degrade them by tagging them with the repulsive name of their conquerors?
You know, you'd think it would be a fairly simple thing to come over to this continent, commit genocide, eliminate the forests, damup the rivers, build our malls and massage parlors, sell our blenders and whoopee cushions, poison ourselves with chemicals, and let it go at that. But no. We have to compound the insult.

...I'm glad the Indians have gambling casinos now. It makes me happy that dimwitted white people are losing their rent money to the Indians.
Maybe the Indians will get lucky and win their country back.
Probably wouldn't want it...
...Look at what we did to it." ...end quote...
.
.
Amusing? True? (Again, "bittersweet")...
I do not know whether Mr. Carlin actually has penned these words...
Irregardless, it reflects many points...
"Food For Thought" if you will...
.
"Food"? (Did somebody say "FOOD")????
Mmmmmm-
.
Oh, and just so you know... I DO hate all of your entries that bespeak of your many recipes and references to food... (They always make my stomach growl).
And that would be funny enough if I didn't have a pup at my feet that, every now and then 'growls' in her sleep. (And no, my feet don't stink)!?! hehehe...
I have taken to growling back at her- I do not know whether she wakes or not, but she will definitely try to keep it up then. How fun!
Punkins sister, Sadie, even made the newspaper- Being the 'daughter' of a photographer, she is featured as the 'salesdog' for Coleman Pillows for ShopKo! And so, Miss Milly has birthed a celebrity!
.
.
.
(Maybe if I buy one of those pillows, Punk will sit pretty on it too)?
Do ya think?
(Me neither).
.
.
.
.
And so begins my day for me... I shall have to go surf the 'www' for some special "Recipes for Rodent flesh" now.
hehehehe?
Have a wunnaful, warm, and cozy day!
XOXO
Anne
