Wanna Go For a Walk?

Good Morning All!
Chilly today- Highs to be in the 60's for the next week or so. Lows in the 40's. Brrr... (but just a little "brrr" -as I adjust to the change in weather).
Crap, Winter is coming....

Before resting to watch that great Packer game with Casey on Sunday, I had made 3 separate trips around the fields...
When the sun was high, I brought the camera along too-

I noted more damage by our deer herd.

This first picture is of my own squash plants...

Deer damage

A pretty close, straight, cut.
(Those darned deer must have some really sharp teeth this year)! hehehe

Further in back now, more deer damage.
Look at all the missing and broken corn stalks!

Venison Damage to Corn
Darn deer-
They eat the young plants while the stalks are short, and succulent. As the stalks get taller the deer just walk all over them-
I suppose in pursuit of a 'yummier' stalk up the way.

But then came the stark realization that I was witnessing things I had never seen before!

I took these first two pictures way back by the woods...

Melon

After seeing that, I saw this one as well.

Melon
WTH???
I did not do that to those poor melons!
Now I know we are really in BiG TROUBLE here

Because it sure looks to me like the dang deer have knives now! hehehe
So much for having sharp teeth...

The field hands have already removed about 5 or 6 loads of cabbages-
And there are pumpkins growing throughout those cabbage plants-

Pumpkin
hehehe   I will have to steal this one just for me!

But no matter how well those pumpkins have come up on their own this year, the harvest will never equal Blazers... (Right down the road a bit).

Pumpkins at Blazers
This represents maybe 1/10th of what was there. (And, they harvest more every day)!

Along with a wagon~load of gourds too!

Wagon Load of Gourds
These too, are harvested on a fairly regular schedule...

But I digress...
...Back to our walk-

Below is just a bunch of weeds and cabbage-

Goldenrod across the field
With a bit of goldenrod in the background- I thought it pretty!

Punk goes straight to my old "climbing tree"-  She seems to love this tree almost as much I do!

Punk- Posing
Then she poses pretty for the camera!  Such a ham!   hehehe

My dryer is calling me once again, so I'd better close for now-
Just thought I would share one of my daily ventures with everyone!
And after that, I am going to rest a while.

Here's hoping all is well in your little corner of the world.

XOXO
Me

PS
Top photo is for those of us in Wisconsin, (among a few other states), that are holding their primaries today.
Go do it!

Intruder Alert! And a Visit To Gritters-

Casey, reading; at her 2nd doctor appointment,
Thursday-

Hi Everyone! Time for me to play a bit of ketchup again-
Wow! It's Sunday already!
Hard to think that so much time gets past me, and so quickly now too.
Still reading, and trying to keep up.
That doesn't work too well. hehehe
Please let me know if I have missed anything earth-shattering?

Got a kick out of Punk the other day-

Clearly she wasn't paying attention...

What'd'ya mean "turn around"?
Whatd'ya mean "turn around"?

HAHAHA That's funny!
HAHAHA! That IS funny!
(She also said to tell PeachieBaby that she is planning on writing a blog... soon)!

We have been busy, between doctor visits and all else.

I had to pick up Punk's allergy meds the other day- And as Suzy Q and hubby Glenn live close to Dr. Spires, we stopped there for a while...

Casey and Sue
CaseyAnne and Sue-
My apologies Gritter, I can't remember what you called your Mothers Day plant.
(I am still in love with it though)!

They took us out by their deer- Casey immediately fell in love with this little girl-

Casey Loving Deer
So sweet she is! (Both 'she's' that is)! hehehe

Glenn feeds her raspberry leaves...

Glenn and Deer

We had such a nice visit- taking them away from their chores for quite a while, but so great to see them both on their turf too!
hehehe
They have been here already to get apples and pears. More soon too.

Upon our returning home -to see the fields are being harvested!

Cnv0374

And to note a certain invasion as well...

Cnv0375
This makes my mouth water!!!

The other morning, chilly, so all the windows had been closed as soon as I'd woke up, Punk began to growl.
Then a bark or two. (The bark she uses for her intruder alert)!

I'd thought that Sue and Glenn were here to pick up the apples and pears for their deer...
No truck, so I checked the yard. No company either.
But Punk sure was itching to get outside.

I checked the middle lawns...

Lo and behold!!!!

Cnv0355
How Punk 'heard' him is beyond me!

And that guy wasn't alone either...

Cnv0353

He'd brought the whole family!
hehehe

Cnv0357

One of them making his way up the old barngrade...

And OH, wouldn't they be good like this???

Cnv0359
hehehe
That is my rotisserie chicken.
Not one to shoot out of season-

Casey and I have been visiting duplexes and going to a few showings-
Some, (most) are not empty, so tough to go into other peoples things...  But that does not stop me from checking for water under the sinks, and below the tubs and toidies too.

Nice neighborhoods too...
So we will have to see a few more yet.

Cnv0362
Casey, making notes and writing down everything unique about each one of them.
We will see a few more next week too.

We have heard nothing about her latest blood test results- yet.
But will keep you all informed to what those tests tell us.

I have to run- Already I am channel hopping between football games...
My Packers play at 3:15 so Casey will be out then. And there will be NO further channel hopping then either!
hehehe

I have already done my wash, walked twice around the place, (up to almost 3 miles a day if/when my back and head permit). Happy to have the pedometer!

I picked some cantaloupe and squash-
Cantaloupe is pieced and in the fridge- Squash is on the oven. Smells yummy too!

My love to all.
Hope you are having a 'wunnaful' Sunday!

XOXO

Another Saturday Night...,

  magnify
This is what I woke up to Saturday morning.
WAY too early for these temps...
.
.
Good Morning, (in a very literal sense);
Did the title bring back a song to your mind?

I had to run to town today. Dog food, (and a few groceries for me too). When I take my Xanax to go anywhere, it always leaves me so completely exhausted when I get back home. I came home, ate a bite, and slept for 3 hours. Probably needed it though, as I'd woken up about midnight last... and stayed up.
Here it is, middle of the night once more, and I am wide~eyed and bushy~tailed.

Speaking of tails... (Let's go with "white" tails). This is the first weekend of (gun) deer hunting in Wisconsin. I am under strict orders to make some venison sloppy joes, some roasts, and some steaks.
(Yeah, but first I need to see the darned venison)!
hehehe
Gee; how come Randy didn't see the humor in that?

And so, the dogs are fit to be tied. There will be no trips to the woods, and very little running around outside for the next ten days. Safer that way.
.
.
Cnv0961 by you.
Some 300+ pounds of pooches here.
And they think I can just reach over them and open that door?
And yes, there IS a pecking order. (Me first).

hehehe

.
Because they have learned that I cannot run in three directions at once; I have learned now that one, (and only one), of them goes out at a time.
(So there).

Casey had an appointment on Wednesday afternoon to discuss her transplant procedure with her doctor at the clinic. This went extraordinarily well. And finally to have one doctor in town up to speed about this all. He has spoken at length with Dr. Sutherland in Minnesota. Kinda nice to talk to a doctor that is at least briefed on the surgery. As you know, we have dealt with some highly ignorant doctors.
Not all their fault either because the standard rule of thumb (anywhere); is to treat the pancreatic pain, in the hopes that each attack will be the last.
We all know it hasn't happened that way for Casey, and that her attacks just keep steamrolling on her- Closer between attacks, and more painful each time.
Her
Fentanyl 50 µg/h do seem to do a nice job keeping her pain down to a more manageable level; though she still must take the vicoden for her breakthrough pain.
Onward to December 18th

She came out to the house after her appointment. Punk wanting to ride back home with her.
Mr Miller stayed in my little truck with me.
Miller didn't pay any attention, (not knowing where Punk had gone to). But check out Punk as Casey was following me down 54.
.
.
.
Cnv0966 by you.
Mirror shot
.
.

When I'd fallen asleep earlier, I had not yet let Miss Milly back inside for the night. She was even a bit upset with me for that...

...She wanted her dinner and a bit of "liquified" water.

Well, OOPS.
She is much happier now.

Time for me to close, and maybe steal a few more Zzz's.
Have a 'wunnaful' Sunday!

XOXO
Anne

Roping A Deer-

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Other

This, from my email...

"Roping A Deer"
(Names have been removed to protect the UNEDUCATED!) --

*****

Rope

*

I had this idea that I was going to rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it.

The first step in this adventure obviously was getting a deer.

I figured since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), that it should not be difficult to rope one; get up to it and toss a bag over its head. (to calm it down).
Then I would hog tie it; and transport it home.

I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope.

(The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it).

After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up -- 3 of them.
I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope.

That darn deer just stood there and stared at me.

I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold.

The deer still just stood and stared at me.
(But you could tell that it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation).

I took a step towards it...
...It took a step away.

I put a little tension on the rope; and then received quite an education.

The first thing that I learned is that while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.

That deer freakin' EXPLODED.

The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger than a cow or a colt.
A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity.
A deer? Not a chance.

That damn thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled.

There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it.

(As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined).

The only up side is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals.

A brief 10 minutes later, the deer was finally tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. (It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the huge gashes in my head).

At that point, I had completely and utterly lost my taste for corn-fed venison.
I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.

I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slowly and painfully somewhere.

There was no love at all between me and that deer.
And at that moment, I hated the thing.
(I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual).

Despite the gashes about my head and face, (and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by violently bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground), I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in.
I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder.
...This was a little trap I had set beforehand, (very much like a squeeze chute).

I got it to back in there; and I started moving up so I could get my rope back...

What I got was even MORE "education"

Did you know that deer bite?
They do!

Never in a million years would I have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when I reached up to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist.

Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and then let go.
A deer bites you and shakes its head, (very much like a pit bull).

They bite HARD (and it hurts).

The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly.
I tried screaming and shaking instead.

My method was ineffective.

While it seemed that the devil deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, it was likely only several seconds.

Being smarter than a deer, (you may be questioning that claim by now?), I tricked it.

While I kept it busy with tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and finally pulled that rope loose.

That was when I got my final education in "Deer Behavior" for the day.

Deer will strike at you with their front feet.

They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about your head and shoulder area. (Their hooves are surprisingly sharp).

I learned a long time ago that, when an animal -- like a horse -- strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.

This was not a horse.

This was a deer. Such trickery would not work.

In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy.
I screamed like a woman, and tried to turn and run.

The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that it paws at you and there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head.

Deer may not be so different from horses after all, (besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil).
The very second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.

When a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave.
(I suspect that it does not recognize that the danger to it has passed).

What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you. (This, while you are laying there crying like a little girl, and covering your head).

I finally managed to crawl under the truck.
The deer went away.

I think now I know why, when people go deer hunting, they bring a rifle with a scope.
(It's just to try to even the odds).

I Always Feel Like...

...(Somebodys Watching Me)!

Talk about a little healthy paranoia!!!!

Good Monday Morning!

I think I froze my little pinkie yesterday. Since I never did call the plumber, I went outside to try to remove the washers discharge hose... (THAT didn't work)! So I guess I will just have to wait 'til Spring to launder my clothing! (Personally, I believe it is a very good thing I live with a couple of dogs)? hehehe

Image

Speaking of those dogs, I had them out for quite a while playing together, but I figured when my little finger lost color it was time for Punkie to come in and thaw her own paws too. She wasn't happy about that, but I see that she did curl up with her paws all tucked under her too! Neither was Miss Milly too happy... She lasted all of about 5 minutes in the house... (Careful Milly, your paws might thaw out)!!! But she comes inside, wants her petting and her pigs ear, and just wants to dash back out. I just cannot get it through my head that it probably IS more comfy for her because that is what she is used to. And I cannot help thinking that one day I wll go out there and find a frozen solid dog... (and with my luck she would be all curled up in her doghouse and I would have to wait til Spring to get her out of there)!

Coming back inside, I was assaulted with such an icky smell... Yup, yet another "mow~iss" in the trap! I wish I knew where the heck they were coming in from??? I hadn't checked the trap in the last few days... hence the nasty smell. (Hope you're not eating breakfast)! hehehe

Last summer, Miss Milly had caught this little guy- I think it is a baby possum, so tiny. Cuter when I realized he had already "passed" too!

Image

A friend of mine was in an accident two days ago; and while there were no injuries, the truck didn't fare nearly as well. And so I have offered up the old Buick (Roadmaster). It has always started in the wintertime no matter how cold it had gotten; and it is one of those "tankety~tank" cars that will give its own life before it will harm a single hair on your head. So I had to go outside and get it running to make sure that it still started in wintertime... Of course it did. (Oh me, of little faith)...

I swept and scraped 'Mother Nature' off of it; letting it warm up before Punkie and I took it for a ride. (And in doing so, I realize just how much I miss driving that car)! They sure don't make 'em like that anymore! (All that, and it still gets between 25 and 30 MPG... I kid you not)! But I will run down to Fleet Farm and get a few bags of sand for in the trunk too. A bit of stability (weight) for the old rear wheel drive.

I took some of Caseys venison out of the freezer and will make that up today. (I have hidden a few of those pieces of meat way down in the freezer... And since I cannot remember if i ever put the picture of "Casey and Her Two Boys" on here, I shall do so now...

Image

That was last year-

And in the course of 15 seconds, she had shot her 1st (and 2nd) deer! Both were nub bucks; but the meat tastes SO much better than "old" deer anyway, so nobody has ever complained about it either! (well maybe if those deer could speak they just might have offered up a complaint or two)!

Such a hodge-podge of thought today...

I took this picture yesterday morning. And I know that I used to know what the 'ring' around the moon means; but have NO idea anymore- Do you?

Image

It was such a colorful ring- The photo does NOT do it justice in the least, but it did capture the essence there~of...

Now, if you really want to see some beautiful photography, please visit Miss Lisa's page. She takes the best pictures!!! (Witty too)! Enjoy!!!

On that note, I shall close for this morning and start vacuuming- (that always warms me up)! And then 'on' with my day!  I still have to find some chairs for my dining room table so maybe I can try to do that too! (Shall I double~up, or halve, that xanax then)?

Have a 'wunnaful' Monday!!!

XOXO

Anne

Is anyone elses 'page counter' screwy? I had a ton of mail, comments etc yesterday and my counter only said I had a few people here- (less than the number of comments even)!  Now how do you comment without viewing my page? Hmmm...
