OK, so it's been a while again. Thank you for the notes, yes I am alive!
A while back I had mentioned that one of Casey's fellow patients (TP/AIT) had simply disappeared. We had met McRick at the hotel upon our arrival to Minneapolis. He had his surgery 2 days before Casey- I'd spoken to him once after his surgery- on Unit 6B, then he was just gone.
I hadn't heard anything from him.
I had lost his mothers email address, and so always included her in my prayers for him too.
Coming online late this afternoon, I had an email from him. OMG! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw who it was from. He is still waiting to go home, but should be released tomorrow after his doctor appointment!
Say "YAY!"
...And then add a HUGE sigh of relief too.
Casey had a dentist appointment today. I spoke with her as she was going in, and haven't heard anything since. Imagine she could be quite sore as they were to fix a cracked (off) tooth. Ouchy.

Yesterday started out kind of chilly- About 5 degrees. Kelli had asked if I would run down and take the blankets off the horses around noon.
I'd spoken to Casey in the meanwhile, and she was itching to get over there herself.
A few minutes after noon, my phone rang...
It was Casey.
The blanket was off Miss Breezie, but Miss May was not cooperating in the least. (It has been a while since Casey has been around the horses lots, so Miss May wasn't having anything to do with her).
I went down there then.
May wanted to play "keep away" from me too, so I grabbed her ball and banged on it a few times.
She came running then!

I told her "fine, just keep it on," and turned toward the gate.
She immediately came to me, and was quickly disrobed.
I really don't think she had "disremembered" Casey;
She was just having too much fun playing with us!

Oh, and for those of you that might not have been around a year ago, you may not know that "DISREMEMBER" is actually a word...
Now this, from my previous entry of it.
disremember • \dis-rih-MEM-ber\ • verb: means to forget

English has been depending upon the word "forget" since before the 12th century, but in 1805 a new rival appeared in print -- "disremember."
A critic in 1869 called "disremember" both "obsolete" and "a low vulgarism," and later grammarians have agreed; it has been labeled "provincial and archaic."
In 1970 Harry Shaw opined that "disremember" was "an illiteracy," adding, "never use this word in standard English." (By 1975, Shaw amended his opinion to "this word is dialectal rather than illiterate.")
"Forget" is indeed a vastly more popular word, but "disremember" still turns up occasionally, often in dialectal or humorous contexts.

Severe Acute Pancreatitis: Overall and Early Versus Late Mortality in Intensive Care Units
Abstract
Objectives: To determine overall mortality and timing of death in patients with severe acute pancreatitis and factors affecting mortality.
Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study of 110 patients admitted to a general intensive care unit (ICU) from January 2003 to January 2006.
Results: The overall mortality rate was 53.6% (59/110); 25.4% (n = 15) of deaths were early (≤14 days after ICU admission). There were no significant differences in age, sex, or surgical/medical treatment between survivors and nonsurvivors. Median Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score was higher among nonsurvivors than survivors (score = 26 vs 19, respectively; P < 0.001), and the duration of hospitalization before ICU admission was significantly longer (4 vs 1 day; P < 0.001). Among the 59 patients who died, those in the early-mortality group were admitted to the ICU significantly earlier than those in the late-mortality group (3 vs 6.5 days; P < 0.05).
Conclusions: Overall mortality and median APACHE II score were high. Death predominantly occurred late and was unaffected by patient age, length of stay in the ICU, or surgical/medical treatment. An APACHE II cutoff of 24.5 and pre-ICU admission time of 2.5 days were sensitive predictors of fatal outcome.

Objectives: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the association between dietary intake of citrus fruits and pancreatic cancer risk.
Methods: Authors searched electronic databases and the reference lists of publications of studies addressing diet and pancreatic cancer up to December 2007. All of the epidemiological studies that obtained individual data on dietary intake of citrus fruits and presented risk estimates of the association between intake of citrus fruits and risk of pancreatic cancer were identified and included. Using general variance-based methods, study-specific odds ratios (ORs)/relative risk and associated confidence interval (CI)/SE for highest versus lowest intake of citrus fruits level were extracted from each article.
Results: Nine articles including 4 case-control studies and 5 cohort studies proved eligible. Overall summary OR using random effect model suggested an inverse association in risk of pancreatic caner with intake of citrus fruits (summary OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.70-0.98) with large heterogeneity across studies (I2 = 49.9%).
Conclusions: Pooled results from observational studies showed an inverse association between intake of citrus fruits and the risk of pancreatic cancer, although results vary substantially across studies, and the apparent effect is restricted to the weaker study design (case-control studies).

A federal grand jury in Maryland has indicted a man known only as "John Doe #17" on child pornography charges, and the Justice Department has released photos of the suspect in an attempt to identify him.

A federal grand jury has indicted a suspect only known as "John Doe 17" for allegedly transporting child pornography via the Internet.
The Justice Department has released photos of the man, whom investigators described as white with curly brown hair, weighing approximately 210 to 250 pounds, in an attempt to identify him.
The indictment charges that on or about May 5, 2007, "John Doe #17," described as "a white male, approximately 210-250 pounds, with curly brown hair" and appearing in images accompanying the documents, "did knowingly transport and ship in interstate and foreign commerce, specifically by means of a computer, child pornography."
The indictment, announced today, refers to a video file named "DV Out Tear - 02[177432]," which "contain[s] visual depictions of a pre-pubescent female posed nude and exposing her genitalia."
"We are confident if a relative or friend sees this picture of 'John Doe #17,' they may recognize him, and we're hoping the local police will contact federal authorities, then we'll be able to prosecute" the suspect, said U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein.
"Besides the traditional news media, if we get these pictures out on the Internet, someone may know the suspect and help identify him."
The Justice Department said the case stemmed from the investigation into a global child porn operation. A user of the service uploaded "two videos of a perpetrator, John Doe #17, engaged in the sexual exploitation of a pre-pubescent female," a department statement said.
Analysts were able to isolate images of the suspect's profile without showing the identity of the alleged victim.
Under the Justice Department's Endangered Child Alert Program, officials can open a case and begin to initiate a criminal investigation upon the discovery of a child pornography image.
John Doe #17 is the 12th suspect to be prosecuted as a result of the program's efforts.
If authorities are able to convict the suspect, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years upon conviction.
U.S. and international law enforcement agencies have used a similar approach to identify child pornography and child sex abuse suspects in the past.

Suspect Images Released, Cases Already Cracked
Federal agents arrested Wayne Nelson Corliss in May at his apartment in New Jersey after a global manhunt.
Interpol had released cropped images of Corliss taken from a series of photos that showed him engaged in sexually explicit conduct with young boys in Southeast Asia. Tips from individuals in the United States confirmed his identity and led to his arrest.
Corliss pleaded guilty to child pornography and related charges in October and is due to be sentenced later this year.
In another case, authorities released an image in 2007 of a man who had originally been distorted with a swirl to conceal his identity. But technicians were able to unscramble it.
Authorities said they had obtained videos and photos showing the man sexually abusing young boys.
After a global appeal, officials were able to identify the man as Christopher Paul Neil, a Canadian who had worked as a school teacher who taught in several Asian countries.
A Thai court convicted him of sexual abuse and related charges. He is serving a prison sentence in that country.

Running the risk that Canada might be listening, my snowplow driver will be out of town from the 24th to the 28th. Crappy that. Maybe it won't snow? Hope not.
With a ton of extra attention, slowly too, my little Punk is returning to normal.
She takes her ball upstairs and waits for me to play. She thinks it's funny to toss the ball at me, and see how it comes down the steps.

Yes, the old Roadmaster has been pumped up, charged up, and fired up too! Such a great old reliable car. (And yes, I hate to see her go, but Casey needs the money so badly).
We go back to Minnesota for her recheck in late March or early April. (I shall have to ask her because I need to make the hotel reservations soon).
Speaking of doctors, Casey brought me in for a shot on Tuesday. On Wednesday I repaid the favor. She has also blogged about it! CLICK.
Since her doctor is not my own, she does not have a "standing order" to be treated for her migraines. And with all she has been through, her doctor thought it best if she was seen at the hospital; in case they wanted to do a CT Scan of her head.
They didn't do one, but they did treat her migraine- Almost as an afterthought though; as the doctor had remembered Casey and wanted to know all about her surgery. And so the story was told and retold. Nice that the doctors there are so nice. (And it didn't really take us THAT long to whip them into shape either). hehehe

Our next project will be working on the nurses. (I wish).
I'd better close- Casey has just called and will be out shortly! YAY! (A reason to get dressed)! hehehe
Then on to finding my floors and my house- Right after I write out my bills. No, that's wrong. I get the dang bills, and write out the checks.

Casey has someone coming from Milwaukee to maybe buy the old Roadmaster. - Not too sure when he is coming, (but I was sure that he would not have appreciated the drivers front tire being flat, or the battery being dead).
To deal with this, I finally broke down and bought another charger, and a new air compressor.
The tire is inflated, thanks to an extension cord borrowed from Jenny Mella's mom, and to Jim too. But I still have to hook up the charger. I shall buy another extension cord tomorrow. (One can never have too many anyway, not around here).
Casey has an appointment early, and I shall stop then.
She is doing very well, save for the fact that she is weighing only between 99 and 101 pounds.

THE Georgia peanut company at the center of one of our nation’s worst food-contamination scares has officially reached a revolting new low: a recent inspection by the Food and Drug Administration discovered that the salmonella-tainted plant was also home to mold and roaches.
You may be grossed out, but insects and mold in our food are not new. The F.D.A. actually condones a certain percentage of “natural contaminants” in our food supply — meaning, among other things, bugs, mold, rodent hairs and maggots.
In its (falsely) reassuringly subtitled booklet “The Food Defect Action Levels: Levels of Natural or Unavoidable Defects in Foods That Present No Health Hazards for Humans,” the F.D.A.’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition establishes acceptable levels of such “defects” for a range of foods products, from allspice to peanut butter.
Among the booklet’s list of allowable defects are “insect filth,” “rodent filth” (both hair and excreta pellets), “mold,” “insects,” “mammalian excreta,” “rot,” “insects and larvae” (which is to say, maggots), “insects and mites,” “insects and insect eggs,” “drosophila fly,” “sand and grit,” “parasites,” “mildew” and “foreign matter” (which includes “objectionable” items like “sticks, stones, burlap bagging, cigarette butts, etc.”).
Tomato juice, for example, may average “10 or more fly eggs per 100 grams [the equivalent of a small juice glass] or five or more fly eggs and one or more maggots.” Tomato paste and other pizza sauces are allowed a denser infestation — 30 or more fly eggs per 100 grams or 15 or more fly eggs and one or more maggots per 100 grams.
Canned mushrooms may have “over 20 or more maggots of any size per 100 grams of drained mushrooms and proportionate liquid” or “five or more maggots two millimeters or longer per 100 grams of drained mushrooms and proportionate liquid” or an “average of 75 mites” before provoking action by the F.D.A.
The sauerkraut on your hot dog may average up to 50 thrips. And when washing down those tiny, slender, winged bugs with a sip of beer, you might consider that just 10 grams of hops could have as many as 2,500 plant lice. Yum.
Giving new meaning to the idea of spicing up one’s food, curry powder is allowed 100 or more bug bits per 25 grams; ground thyme up to 925 insect fragments per 10 grams; ground pepper up to 475 insect parts per 50 grams. One small shaker of cinnamon could have more than 20 rodent hairs before being considered defective.
Peanut butter — that culinary cause célèbre — may contain approximately 145 bug parts for an 18-ounce jar; or five or more rodent hairs for that same jar; or more than 125 milligrams of grit.
In case you’re curious: you’re probably ingesting one to two pounds of flies, maggots and mites each year without knowing it, a quantity of insects that clearly does not cut the mustard, even as insects may well be in the mustard.
The F.D.A. considers the significance of these defects to be “aesthetic” or “offensive to the senses,” which is to say, merely icky as opposed to the “mouth/tooth injury” one risks with, for example, insufficiently pitted prunes. This policy is justified on economic grounds, stating that it is “impractical to grow, harvest or process raw products that are totally free of non-hazardous, naturally occurring, unavoidable defects.”
The most recent edition of the booklet (it has been revised and edited six times since first being issued in May 1995) states that “the defect levels do not represent an average of the defects that occur in any of the products — the averages are actually much lower.” Instead, it says, “The levels represent limits at which F.D.A. will regard the food product ‘adulterated’ and subject to enforcement action.”
Bugs in our food may not be so bad — many people in the world practice entomophagy — but these harmless hazards are a reminder of the less harmless risks we run with casual regulation of our food supply. For good reason, the F.D.A. is focused on peanut butter, which the agency is considering reclassifying as high risk, like seafood, and subjecting it to special safety regulations. But the unsettling reality is that despite food’s cheery packaging and nutritional labeling, we don’t really know what we’re putting into our mouths.
Soup merits little mention among the products listed in the F.D.A.’s booklet. But, given the acceptable levels for contaminants in other foods, one imagines that the disgruntled diner’s cri de coeur — “Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup!” — would be, to the F.D.A., no cause for complaint.

I caught myself- for the 100th time, looking out the kitchen window- specifically to look toward the kennel.
Wonder how long it takes to settle in that she won't be there no matter how many times I look? (And she has been INside all winter too). - Of course there are still times that I think to call Mom, just for that split~second... (And she's been gone 10+ years).
Punk is getting along well enough
Every now and then to just stare into the distance, to cry a bit...
But we have been playing outside lots too.

As many of you know, I probably don't live alone.
But what you don't know is that I finally got a new camera.
It has night vision on it. Infrared. And I have been having fun just taking random shots every now and then.
On the first night, I probably took about 20 shots just sitting on the couch after waking up about 2Am.
As I uploaded them the next day, I realized something was quite weird-
About ½-way through the pictures I'd taken on that night... (I hadn't moved either the camera or myself).

Good Evening Everyone;
I want warmth- Like in the above picture.
Even the floorboards seem quieter tonight. The furnace is running- It is cold outside.
And sometimes that cold just permeates, and stays for a while.
I think that's how my bones feel right now.
We got back here maybe 2 hours ago. Punk so happy to see us. And always such a great welcome home.
The few times that I leave her here, one would think I was gone for months on end.
Such a warm and loving welcome though.
Punk sleeps now.
Curled up on that darn little squeak ball that she took from the entrance.
Her Mama Milly's little ball.
She didn't want her collar. ~Just that damned little ball. - She knows.
She ran out to the car when we got back. She ran all around it, sniffing-
Then she turned, looking toward the open kennel, and came back to me.
No place else to go. Not in the dark. Not in the cold. - She knows.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance...
Her bright eyes are intent; Her eager body quivers.
Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Yesterday Miss Milly went into heat. With the surge in her hormones, one can only guess that it made the tumor inside grow so swiftly as to force her uterus to prolapse.
Milly turned 13 - On Christmas Day.
She left Casey and I about 7:15 at the Animal E.R. in Green Bay.
She had somewhere very important to go you see.
And I know where she is and what she is doing too.
She waits now, "just this side of Heaven."
Patient as she always was.
I can only guess there are children and puppies where she is.
And maybe a little hideaway where she can escape every now and then.
A place that only herself and God know about
