Makes no sense to me. Other than the fact that if we step on a nail, it's a puncture wound which allows the anaerobic bacteria to grow and THAT'S what makes us ill, the overabundance. Our body can process the bacteria when it's not so concentrated.
Good question. Maybe our stomach can handle the water better because of the acids or biles or whatever that is in there that helps with digestion. It sorta neutralizes things a bit so it can move on through our bodies. Since our outer skin is between the outside world and our blood, then it was not meant to handle any direct contamination. I don't know....I'm just sorta making this up as I type! It's the weekend....the boys are home....driving me nuts with their fighting....I can't think! I doubt I could even tell you my name right now.
I live in the country and of course I have my own well- Truth be known though, that has no bearing on anything. City water also has rust in it. Just check the hardness of your water- (and the ring in your toidy). hehehe
Tetanus lives in the ground and can be carried in the intestinal tract of people and animals. The spores are everywhere, especially in dirty objects. Open wounds are easier to clean and puncture wounds give the spores a good place to grow and be carried into your bloodstream. I've been given tetanus shots for rusty nails, brand new nails, and dog bites since it can be carried in the saliva. It can live in the intestinal tract, so drinking it doesn't have the same effect as depositing it in a wound.
My latest shot was one year ago, in January- when I had sewn (machine) through my finger. Before that, who knows? But I know I got one when I was in 2nd grade and had stepped on a rusty nail on the playground. it was impaled all the way through my foot, and stuck out the top. Kinda gross. The teacher made me soak my foot until my mom got there and my foot turned the water red.
Loretta; What you have said is also correct. However...
My well water comes from the sky, soaks down in through the ground, and is returned to me to drink. Why then would there be no tetanus in my water?
I do not mean to be obtuse, but if it is in our environment, why can we drink water and not have to get a shot?
That's a good question. I have no idea about that one. Now it's going to bother me until I find out. Poop. I just got back from the doctor's office and could have stumped him with that one.
How come...
ReplyDeleteHow come we have to get tetanus shot when we get cut with a rusty nail?
And how come we don't when we drink hard water?
XOXO

ReplyDeleteThanks Snotball- but no really. How come?
It doesn't make sense to me-
I don't boil my water or anything... so why can we drink it?
hmmm well maybe cause the rusty nail goes right into your blood but when you drink rusty water it doesn't hmmmm
ReplyDeletemust ponder that one

Where do you live where your water isn't treated?

It can pass through the gastrointestinal system without causing damage. It's when it gets into the bloodstream that you have problems.
ReplyDeletebut I think the question is then why do people with open sores in their GI not get tetanus.
